Box and supplies last year were located at the Well but this doesn’t look possible this year. Rotaractors might also put some together. A zoom meeting will be scheduled to make a work project date. Margaret Franz (sister of Mary Steinhauser)
Glen Brown introduced Margaret to us. On June 9, 1975 there was a riot in the BC Penitentiary (Max security prison in New West BC), resulting in 15 staff, including Mary Steinhauser, being taken hostage by three inmates. The incident lasted nearly 2 days when a tactical unit stormed the prison. Unfortunately Mary Steinhauser was killed in the process. The riot resulted in a Commission of Inquiry to look into prison conditions and how to alleviate or improve these.
Margaret read to us select passages from her new book “Between Blade and Bullet” featuring the life of Mary Steinhauser and the circumstances in which Mary worked.

What is a Rotary Foundation Global Grant Scholarship?
Established in 1947, the original Ambassadorial Scholarship program was designed to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. With the launch of the Rotary Grants model, scholarships are now used to fund study by graduate students whose career goals support one or more of Rotary’s areas of focus. The funding is the same as a humanitarian global grant with a minimum scholarship amount of US$30,000. Upon returning home, Rotary Scholars share with Rotarians and others their experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country, and what career they will go into in order to meet the seven areas of focus and spread good will and understanding.
