Judge Burgess received his Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Biola University, and his law degree from Washington and Lee School of Law.  Following admission to the bar, Judge Burgess joined the United States Air Force, where he served as a JAG officer for seven years, with assignments in Texas, England and Kyrgyzstan.  Judge Burgess left the Air Force with the rank of major and joined the United States Attorney's Office, first in Sherman, and then in Fort Worth.  Judge Burgess spent more than 13 years prosecuting organized crime before Governor Abbott appointed him judge of the 352nd District Court in 2017. 

Judge Burgess and his wife Amy have been married 24 years and have two children, Thomas and Grace
