The Sixth Jamaica Literacy Project 2018 was held April 11 through April 15.   Two local British-Jamaican representatives from Books for the Caribbean, along with two representatives from the Rotary Club of Ocho Rios and three to four representatives from our Club all participated.

As we have done in the past, we attended a meeting of the Rotary Club of Ocho Rios on Wednesday evening, climbed up into the mountains on Thursday morning and visited three rural isolated schools.  We rented a large van with a local driver. We all packed lunches since there is no place to purchase meals in these neighborhoods.

We have been working with these schools in the Parrish of St. Ann for several years.   We personally bring books and other literacy materials that the teachers have specifically requested.  Each school has an individual budget of $500.  We have purchased computers, projectors, laminating machines, workbooks, pencils, white boards, manipulatives, books, etc.   Most of these materials are not available in Jamaica and we ship and/ or bring quite a variety of items.

After that we delivered books to the Parish Library and prepared for a craft project with all the children.  Our activity with the library varies.  We have had a magician, a children’s music sing along, and various craft projects.  Last year the children made visors, this year they made change purses.  Next year we are trying to schedule a puppet show.  The librarian selects books that we purchase from a local bookstore and donate.
