Did you know that 21% of US adults read below a 5th grade level, and 19% of high school grads are considered illiterate? Illiterate individuals have more workplace accidents, more often misuse medication due to their inability to read relevant info (warnings, dosage, etc.), and the higher the illiteracy rate, there is a corresponding drop in our nation’s GDP?

The Rotary Club of San Pedro is battling illiteracy by putting on our “San Pedro Rotary Readers” event in April at the Los Angeles Public Library on Gaffey. We are bringing at-risk children into contact with authors, illustrators and storytellers presenting the magical world of reading in a fast-paced, fun and interactive way. Participating children will receive a backpack with age-appropriate books, resources and other items that will assist them in their journey to literacy, including a zumba dance, a library tour, and instant library cards for those who don't already have them.

Children's book authors Annabeth Bondor-Stone and Connor White will provide an interactive presentation of their book "SHIVERS - The Pirate Who is Afraid of EVERYTHING!". At the end of the program, snacks and a signed copy of "Shivers!" will be included in the childrens' backpacks.

While the kids are busy, their parents or caregivers will be coached by a skilled bilingual educator in habits and tools that support building good reading skills at home.

For this event we have already received a corporate grant from Barnes & Noble Booksellers, a community service grant from Rotary International, and are actively searching for additional sponsorship. We have committed local partners including LA Public Library, Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, YWCA, Toberman Neighborhood and Harbor Interfaith Services who all provide services every day to local children and families.

Rotary is committed to literacy. Come join us in our mission to teach our community’s children to read by donating your time, money, or other resources to the cause. Learn more, donate to, and share the cause by visiting our crowdfunding site here!
