Problem: In the last few years, the City of Los Angeles has experienced an epidemic of youth violence that has been rapidly spreading from the inner cities to the suburbs. Gangs are no longer just the problem of those who live in the crime-ridden neighborhoods where the gangs thrive, they are now everyone's problem.
Project: The purpose of this project is to provide opportunity and resources to keep kids out of gangs. This grant provides for the purchase of after-school athletic equipment, supplies and a van to transport kids at risk for becoming gang members. Activities include: (1) Sports teams for youth in the community; (2) Volunteering to put on community events (3) Implementing activities, such as field trips; (4) Participating Rotary clubs will have hands-on opportunity to meet with anti-gang advocates and participate in gang prevention seminars; and (5) Participate in a hands-on project with the GSE team at the gang center. The GSE team will share with District 5280 members their experiences with gang prevention is Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Beneficiaries: The beneficiaries include the children and families within the targeted community. In partnership with "A Better LA" and C.U.R.E, the Rotary District of 5280 will provide hands-on volunteer work and funding for several anti-gang efforts. A collaboration of efforts to address this problem was formulated by District 5280. C.U.R.E. (Common Unity Reaching Everyone) is a self-help community-based organization founded by ex-gang members to provide gang prevention strategies in dealing with gang
recruitment and violence in the community. Gangs are recruiting children as prospective members as young as ten years old. Research has proven that structured after-school supervised activities provide children with organized mentors that assist in developing discipline, self-concept, team-building and fair play; attributes needed to resist the recruitment into neighborhood gangs. The ability to transport children outside their immediate community will provide them with a variety of experiences that will expose them to alternatives. Example trips include to the church, nature preserves, museums and community enrichment programs. Many of these children have not traveled more than five blocks outside their neighborhood.
This work will have a domino impact all over South Los Angeles because of how the gangs are interconnected.
The estimated time of this project is one year.
