This year, under the direction of incoming District Governor Susanne Sundberg, District 5280 is launching a peace initiative to bring greater peace and understanding to Los Angeles. In partnership with "A Better LA" and C.U.R.E., the Rotary District of 5280 and 4420 will be writing matching grants to fund gang mitigation in Sao Paulo, Brazil and Los Angeles.

"A Better LA" is a non-profit organization established by Pete Carroll, to provide opportunity, resources and administrative oversight to anti-gang programs. This organization needs computers for after-school programs for children of south Los Angeles.

C.U.R.E is a non-profit organization run by former gang member that provides gang exit training and gang prevention support. In addition to training, C.U.R.E provides after-school and summer programs to give kids who have little options and resources an opportunity to overcome these disadvantages. C.U.R.E's methods have a proven track record of gang mitigation.

This year Group Study Exchange (GSE) team 's vocational focus will be gang mitigation. Outgoing scholars will be selected on merit as it pertains to their contribution to bring better understanding and peace within communities riddled with gang violence. The incoming team from Brazil will be similarly focused.  The G.S.E program will be overlapped with matching grants to fund the peace efforts in Los Angeles and Sao Paulo.  The matching grants will focus on gang prevention and intervention.

The Rotary Club of Manhattan Beach will be contributing $2,000 for this Peace Project.  Monica Farrell has agreed to be the liaison with the District to coordinate our participation.
