Twenty-five years ago today, May 4th, the Supreme Court of the United States decided women could be members of Rotary. Two years later, in 1989, the Rotary Council on Legislation opened membership to women worldwide.
District 5280 invites you to attend a 25th Anniversary Celebration of Women in Rotary on Sunday, May 20, 2012, 11:30-1:30, at Killer Shrimp in Marina del Rey. This luncheon is open to all Rotarians, spouses, partners and friends. So please be sure to spread the word!
We are honored to have the first female Rotary Club President Sylvia Whitlock as our special speaker. In 1982 the men of the Rotary Club of Duarte invited Sylvia and two other women to be members only to have Rotary International terminate the Duarte Rotary charter. In 1987, the Supreme Court ruled in their favor and had the "Ex" removed from their title and they once again were paying Rotary International dues. An interesting story you will want to hear! Sylvia was the first woman to ever serve as a Club President and to attend PETS. She will be District 5300 Governor for 2012-13.
With your RSVP, please indicate if you would prefer Killer Shrimp or Salmon for your entree. Also include your year inducted into Rotary as well as a few paragraphs about Women in Rotary.
