My Fellow Rotarians,

I cannot believe that I have just completed my first quarter as your club President. It has been a whirlwind and a learning curve, and I am happy to present my first quarterly report.

We have our budget in place for the year and have had three board meetings--things are beginning to move along.  Our first fundraiser was the half day fishing trip out of Long Beach; we had good participation and thanks to Larry McGrew and Dale Self’s efforts, it was a success.  We participated in the cardboard boat race at the District Picnic, which was a really fun project.  Thanks to Sam Torres, who did a great job in designing the boat and supervising other Rotarians in the construction of our vessel which was successfully launched.  I attended my first Presidents’ dinner and Patricia was there to keep me out of trouble.  We also got a good idea for a fundraiser that Larry and Dale are working on.

Diane Davis decided that she was going to be an active past President (thank my lucky stars), and in addition to giving me advice, has taken on the job of Program Chair and the weekly programs have been great!  We’ve heard from legendary football and basketball stars and have learned about more serious issues like Alzheimer’s Disease.  So please contact Diane if you have interesting speakers that you think the membership would enjoy listening to. Thank you Diane!

Membership Chair and Co-Chair, Kevin MacDonald and Raul Lopez, got things going on our quest for new members with their membership meeting where they got us all involved in providing names of potential members. A Rotarian was assigned to each group to monitor the progress of membership, so let’s keep Kevin and Raul busy.

We had our first off sight meeting at the Columbia Space Center where we were able to see the mock up of the Space Shuttle.

The Governor made his yearly visit on September 25th , where he inducted two new members to our club; welcome, Jenette DiGenova, and Tony Diep.  He also recognized three of our members with the Rotary Visionary Awards: Rich Strayer, John Lacey, and Dan Fox.  Congratulations!

We enjoyed Spirit Week with the Downey and Warrren High cheer squads, football team members, advisors, and faculty who were our guests for lunch. They provided such great enthusiasm with their cheers and colorful outfits. . . ah to be young again.

Finally, we are looking forward to our pancake breakfast, golf tournament and Foundation Dinner, which are right around the corner.

A Club Assembly is currently scheduled for November 20th, at which time the various board chairs will discuss their current and planned activities, and there will be a financial report to the membership.

All the avenues of service are important, but our focus remains on membership and New Generations.  So please continue to pursue new members.  Remember: our goal is TEN NET NEW MEMBERS AND AT LEAST TWO MORE INTERACT CLUBS.

Thank you, and keep those new members coming!
