OLPH Interact Takeover

From a bottle of Merlot or Cabernet, both ruby-red wines, to red strawberries dipped in white chocolate and decorated with dark chocolate, the students from Our Lady had brought it here for us to buy.  In a slide show, they explained how all the money raised will go toward their service programs.  Those projects include the Ronald MacDonald House in Long Beach for which they already collect pop can tabs.  Another special cause is Mrs. Sullivan’s Education for Learning. Mrs. Sullivan was a seventh-grade teacher at OLPH who went to Uganda to help students there. 

Among other activities, the OLPH’ers assist with our club’s entry in the  District 5280 Boat Race, Gifts for Soldiers and Toy Drive USA.

With such worthy causes as incentive, club members bid amazing amounts of money for bouquets of roses and lilies set in decorated red glass vases, and for silver platters of oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies.  The high mark in the bidding was set by an arrangement of scarlet roses, Peruvian lilies marked with crimson freckles, and dancing on a wire above, a red-feather butterfly hair clip. 

Among the bidders were Mike Pohlen and Larry Garces, who could be seen enjoying the cookies after purchasing them.  Kevin MacDonald took back to work a box of King of Cakes cupcakes, decorated with spritzes of red and white icing. Dan Fox outbid Larry Garces and came away with a prized pineapple upside down cake.

Rich Strayer helped raise the bidding level on several items, as did Larry McGrew, Alex Lopez and Vahid Babaian. Bill Kirkwood took away a prize by making a preemptive bid with the announcement, “one bid only.’ It’s yours, Bill.

When the last of the sugar-sprinkled cookies and red satin covered boxes of candy had been sold, President Paul announced that we had helped the OLPH students raise over nine hundred dollars for their projects.  That’s a lot of red chocolate heart –shaped Lolita-like lollipops.
