“I’ve got something for everyone in this room. And you can’t use it alone.”
With a promise like that, who could resist the ebullient personality and generous offer from Mike Cammarata, for 15 years the manager of Del Rio Lanes on Florence Avenue in Downey.
On the back of every one of his business cards Mike had written, “One free hour of bowling, Sunday-Thursday only.” And with his signature, he had added on each card, “Thanks, Rotary!”
Del Rio Lanes is a hold-over from and a return to the days when bowling was a common family and community pastime, and leagues were everywhere. Del Rio stages fundraisers for organizations ranging from schools and churches and baseball teams. For a twenty-first century touch there is even Cosmic Bowling (in the dark with black lights), karaoke and more.
