Can't Forget the Candy!

Carson-Gardena-Dominguez Rotary Club was able to network its way into offering an amazing amount of resources to Camp Pendleton during the Camp Pendleton Collection Program the club engages in every year! Click to read more about this example of how "Rotary Rocks!"

On Friday, January 12th our club members Glenn Mitchell and Chris Childers were able to pick up 27,240 POUNDS of See's Candy to take to Camp Pendleton Marine Base. This was made possible through our very own Barry Waite and the Carson Chamber of Commerce's email blasts about this event to the chamber's membership. See's Candy heard about the program and offered this amazing donation! A quick phone call to Penske later, and Glenn was able to secure a truck to take the load of candy to the base. However, that was just the beginning. " I did not know the total amount of the donation until Thursday morning," Glenn explains. "All the lady at See's would tell me was they are donating candy for the Rotary Camp Pendleton project. I had arranged to store the candy at one of my client's facilities, but when I found out the actual amount, I called Penske to reserve a second truck," Glenn mentions. 

 

Upon arrival to the base, the trucks were emptied by many off-duty, volunteer Marines. The news of this delivery was broadcast on their social media platforms, and ALL the candy was GONE by 6:30 PM. Some candy was set aside as Glenn concludes, "I also got permission from See's to donate some of the candy to the South Bay Police Departments that are helping with the January 20th collecting of baby diapers." The Camp Pendleton diaper donation is of huge importance as that is the most requested service good to be donated to the base. There is a huge need for help to these service men and women. 

 

We are so thrilled to be able to use our resources and partnerships to create insane opportunities like these. A Camp Pendleton Collection for needed goods got a "sweet" twist due to the relentless generosity of Rotary's friends. We look forward to having even more examples of compassion in this new year.
