IT HAPPENED THIS WEEK

It was a fairly held election and the pre-election polls showed the challenger had the broad support of the electorate, yet on Wednesday the old President was up at the podium running the meeting. No, this wasn't Iran, it was the weekly meeting of the Culver City Rotary Club and newly demoted Past-President Kathy Haworth was still running the show refusing to give up the gavel to the next President.
President-To-Be Bill Gardner was out of town and
his term doesn't start until July 1st so Kathy actually was filling in for one last meeting.
Allan Goldman got the meeting started by giving the Invocation followed by Mayor Andy Weissman who led the Pledge. Scott Easley performed God Bless America and everyone agreed that he just might be the next Susan Boyle. There were no visiting Rotarians, unless you consider Dr. Rick Freebairn in that category. Rick was in town and he came to the meeting with his daughter Jill Pattis. Our only other visitor, Tony Haworth, arrived a bit late so he was not able to enjoy the Welcome Song, as led by Carmen Portnoy.
President Kathy announced that Bill Knowles, father of Larry Knowles, just passed away and Kathy encouraged everyone to drop a card to Larry and Sandy. Our thoughts go out to you Larry.
Tim Messmer gave a report on the West Basin Water District toilet exchange project which took place last Saturday. There were 8 Rotarians who helped and an equal number from the Latinos Unidos Club. In all, 340 toilets were given away. On Saturday, June 27th we will need volunteers to receive the old toilets that will be recycled.
Carmela Raack announced that the District event, "Tour of the Town," happens this weekend with a stop off at Rotary Plaza. Linda and Carmela need some help for the luncheon so please contact Linda and donate a few hours of your time. The event will run from 11:00 until 2:00 at Rotary Plaza. You can reach Linda at 310-804-6432 to arrange to help.
Dieter Holberg approached the podium and announced that to commemorate his 80th birthday he was fining himself $80. Dieter really wanted to talk about two new stage productions taking place at his beloved Pierson Playhouse in Pacific Palisades. The shows are Smoky Joe's Café and The Mark Twain You Don't Know. After the announcements, Tim Messmer led a quick game of Two Up which allowed Kathy to give away some loot that she had collected over the last year.
Our speaker for this week's meeting was our own Rebecca Young who gave her craft talk. Rebecca, who is the Director of Catering at the Radisson Hotel where we meet, gave a very nice presentation about her upbringing here in California and her involvement in the hotel industry. Great job Rebecca!
The meeting concluded with some wisdom from Dr. Paul Knoll and a little humor from Cartwright Sheppard.
