Mad Cow Disease certainly sounds a lot scarier than Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (well maybe not) and so the Swine Flu makes for much better headlines than H1N1 flu virus. Elephantiasis, rhinovirus, salmonella infections, and crow's feet - I don't want anything to do with them. I bring up the Swine Flu for two reasons. First, the flu was definitely the main topic of conversation around the tables at lunch on Wednesday. More importantly though, this possible flu pandemic made me think of our retired member, Joe Lescoulie, who was a young boy during the Great Flu of 1918. I called Joe yesterday and he recalled that his mother kept him out of school for a full year because the flu was so bad here in Culver City. Joe turns 97 on May 11th and if anyone wants to give him a call or send him a card his phone number is 310-838-6015 and his address is 10494 Culver Blvd., Culver City, CA 90232. He is doing well and he sends his regards to everyone in the Club. Wednesday's meeting started right on time with Joe Davidson giving the Invocation, Art Endo leading the Pledge, and new member Rebecca Young singing the Patriotic Song. Guest were introduced by Cy Pierce and they included Art Rangel from the Auburn Rotary Club and Catherine Fritz, who came with Joel Forman. Bill Gardner led the Welcome Song and then stayed at the podium to talk about a new opportunity that has been presented to the Club. The West Basin Municipal Water District has organized a toilet exchange program and they have approached us (through Ed Little) to assist in the distribution of the new toilets. This program will allow people to exchange their water guzzling old toilets for new water-saving ones at no cost. Our Foundation will receive a donation of $15 for each toilet that we help swap out. The event will last for two Saturdays beginning June 13th. See Bill Gardner for more details. There was the usual amount of announcements including.. Art Endo announced that there will be a meeting of the Culver City Rotary Community Foundation right after the general meeting next Wednesday.. Craig Ferre gave a report on the very successful beach clean-up event last Sunday at the pier in Venice. The Surfrider Foundation sends many thanks even though Craig wasn't at the event (he and Rob Barber were both at some sort of music festival called Stagecoach.).. Carmela Raack, who is beginning to channel legendary Foundation fundraiser Nandlal Parekh, is requesting that each member donate at least $250 to the Foundation as part of a Two-For-One program. See Carmela for additional information.. Janet Chabola shared good news regarding Dee Cherko - Dee is doing a lot better and is beginning physical therapy with the goal of being able to get back on her feet.. Ann Murakami is participating in the Relay for Life at Culver City High School on May 16th and 17th and she would like to encourage all members to stop by and walk and to donate to the cause. Ann is walking in memory of her late mother and in memory of Phil Newman and all other friends and Rotarians that have been impacted by cancer. There was still time for a few fines with the big news that Andy Weissman had been coronated as Mayor at the last Council meeting. Joel Forman was recognized for receiving the news that his daughter, who lives in Brazil, was expecting her first child. Michele Walman and Cy Pierce were each fined for receiving their updated roster books, and Clint was singled out for missing the beach clean-up event last Sunday. Following fine time, there was a brief presentation of the winners of the District Art Contest. Darlene Kiyan introduced Christine Hatanaga, the art teacher at Culver City High School who brought the three young artists (and their art work) who were the finalists in the contest. The last announcement before the program began concerned the approval of the 3H Grant from Rotary International. A copy of the letter from Steve Townsend is included in the Reciprocator. Congratulations to all the Rotarians that made this grant possible. Carmen Portnoy introduced our speaker, an inspiring woman named Karen West who had agreed to fill in at the last minute. Karen is the author of a book entitled The Trouble with the Alphabet, an illustrated book detailing the plight of children in countries around the world.
