IT HAPPENED THIS WEEK
May 26, 2010
By Chris King
The scandal to uncover President Bill "I'm Not Going to Touch That" Gardner's political leanings continue this week as your intrepid
Reciprocator author sits down to type what is his second and last Reciprocator write-up of the year. I was so busy working on delving into President Bill's sordid past that I arrived at the meeting late and therefore missed the Patriotic Song, Pledge, and Prayer. I'm sure each Rotarian who handled those aspects of the meeting brought the club much relief as they temporarily relieved President Bill of his duties behind the lectern.
In any case, the meeting started at its usual late time under the current administration at 12:37 with Cy Pierce announcing that we had no visiting Rotarians nor any guests (other than our speaker). Craig Ferre then led us in the Welcome Song as he played along with his musical instrument, which consisted of President Bill's butter-knife-gavel and the Rotary Bell.
Our meeting continued with some solemn news that Carmela's husband, Jim, is having some heart trouble. We send our thoughts and prayers, Carmela.
In another health update that was slightly more uplifting, it was noted that Red Betts' walker has transitioned into that big Walker Heaven in the Sky. Red is no longer using a walker, and he's easily maneuvering around our meeting under his own power! Good for you, Red. President Bill claims he saw Red doing reverse lay ups at the YMCA's basketball court. Yours truly, who is a Celtics fan, thinks that the Lakers could well use Red's skill because they're going to need it in their rematch from two years ago as the Celtics look to take back their rightful title!
Announcements followed with the following:
Linda Black. Our club needed to approve a District Simplified Grant for funds to be used for Track Meet banners and medals. A motion was made to this effect by Craig Ferre. Don seconded the motion. And all were in favor with none opposed.
Janet. We are preparing a "reverse" matching grant with our club in India for white boards and electronic screens for classrooms in Culver City. The project would be for $25,000 total. Janet, Clint, and Kathy all agreed to be listed on the grant. Thank you all!
Kathy. Get your RSVPs in to watch as we conduct a science experiment: Can marsupials swim? There are 4 spaces left on the boat. RSVP today!
Alan Goldman. June 9th will be a Foundation Meeting and officer election. There are 2 open seats. Bruce and Cy have been nominated thus far, but other nominations are welcome from the membership.
Art Endo. Art was rudely interrupted when President Bill's cell phone rang. I believe it rang to the tune of "Y-M-C-A," but I could not be sure. George Plato was calling, and yours truly who has a close tie with the club Treasury this year is hoping that $50 fines will be levied on all those who touched the phone to talk to George including Alan Goldman, Andy Weissman, Rob Barber, and Linda Black. That $350 would do wonders for balancing our budget (which is running at a surplus under our Democratic Treasurer, thank you very much). Art was so rudely interrupted that his announcement to remind us of the Foundation Meeting was nearly lost.
But it was during this entire phone debacle, that I got a great insight into our President's political leanings: "This is not a Democracy," President Bill stated. So, from this, I have to conclude that President Bill must be a Socialist. Now it all makes sense: the hair, the mustache: he's trying to look like Stalin.
Back to reality! Comrade Bill announced that the Culver City Unified School District presented us with a lovely certificate thanking us for our 80 years of dedication and support of the Education Foundation.
Linda Black. She announced that we received additional district recognitions for our support of Youth Services, International Service and Community Service. The Community Service Award was for the Track Meet.
Comrade Bill. The book is still at the hotel. Only Cy signed it this week, but we learned that Cy signs in under a different name when he goes to Deano's Motel. He usually signs in once before lunch, for 5 minutes or so, and once after lunch, for about 3 minutes. Comrade Bill said that our club should comport itself with a "kind of decency," so he "wasn't going to touch it." I'm not sure what he wasn't going to touch, and I'm even less sure about why he used the word "decency" when describing our club. Oh well.
With fines magically passing us by, Janet announced our speaker for the week, Dr. Toni Gallardi. She is a psychologist who advocates what she calls the "Like Quake Method" to enable her clients to overcome fear. She believes that "we can all be agents of change in the world," which fits with Rotary's mission very nicely. And if one were to summarize her speech with a quote, the Mahatma Gandhi quote would fit well: "Be the change you want to see in the world."
Paul Knoll sent us off with wisdom in this same vein reminding us of our mission of service and of the elimination of polio.
It was a good meeting, and I've enjoyed authoring the Reciprocator, Comrades and Friends. See you all on the cruise.
Have a great week Rotarians.
