IT HAPPENED THIS WEEK

This week's meeting ran on marsupial daylight savings time. Our Prez is still trying to impress us with his attempt to run a smooth meeting. His anxiety resulted in opening the meeting at 12:12PM. After some arm twisting and dropping guilt complexes on the members, our president volunteered Jim Machado for the invocation and Chris King for the usual patriotic song (God Bless America). Then our fearless leader forgot the time. Despite repeated grumbling of members and knives gently tapping glass of water for about ten minutes, the Prez remembered that he is not quite demoted. There were no visitors or any guests present. This was just as well, otherwise we would have been there until midnight. Even though there were no guests, Keith Jones led us in the welcome song so we can welcome each other.Linda Black announced that the District Conference starts the following day, with the District Assembly scheduled for May 22nd. After some organized confusion, Linda announced a new District position, referred to as director, is being created. Kathy announced that the long-awaited demotion party will be on June 26th. Next came involuntary donation time. Yours truly mentioned that two awards were recently given to the club for supporting the tutors program. One award is for the club for a donation and yours truly received the other one for tutoring Middle School students in math at a cost of $15. Chris King gave the Boy Scouts a $500 check. A service charge of $4.99 was levied on everyone not wearing a badge or pinMost members.
Several members thought that the police were here to investigate the disappearance of the countless gavels that set an all time Rotary record by any club in one year. Fourtunately for the culprits the officers were our guest speakers.
Our program was a presentation by Sgt. Agiaby and Det. Palacio of the Culver City Police Department. The Juvenile Diversion Program helps at risk youths and their parents get back on track. It is a combination of physical training (for the youth),counseling, education and team building over an 18 week period. Although this has been a very effective program, it like many programs is being effected by the current budget crisis. It would be a diservice to our community if the Juvenile Diversion Program were to be significantly curtailed or even eliminated. This is the time for not only the Rotary Club to step up to help but for all Service Clubs of Culver City to come together to see that this much needed service continues.
Fortunately, the meeting ended up on a positive note by the wisdom department chair, Paul Knoll. He pointed out the significance of the number 46. For Rotarians, this number is the number of times Ed Little dozed off at meetings this year. However, with a great nod from the members, the number 46 represents the number of days to the demotion party.

Culver City Rotary Community Foundation
The Foundation will be holding its annual election for 2 seats on the board. Cy Pierce and Bruce Jagger have agreed to serve another term, and we will also be taking nominations from the floor. Election shall be held at the meeting in June at Rotary Plaza.

A Note from Carmela Raack
Club members have been very supportive in our Rotary Foundation giving this year. We will have another 6 or more Paul Harris Fellows given to spouses, grandchildren or others and the club is almost a 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club.
Most of the club has been generous in their support but there are still some Rotarians who have not contributed this year. President-Elect Linda Black has written several grants that will multiply our donations back to Culver City but we need the support of the club members to receive these grants.
To help encourage checks or billing, for every $100 donated a Rotarian will have a chance to win a $1,000 Paul Harris Fellow. The drawing will be at the club meeting on May 12th.
Following the two Paul Harris Fellows presented last week, donations were increased by $450! We are almost to our goal! Contact Linda or me with your contribution.
