IT HAPPENED THIS WEEK
April 28, 2010
By Dannie Cavanaugh
To paraphrase Snoopy, it was a cold and rainy meeting. Actually, it wasn't rainy because we were inside but it sure was cold. I could see
Chuck Perelman shivering over in the corner since he had arrived without a parka.
Bruce Jagger got things started with an impromptu Invocation, Anne Murakami followed with the Pledge, and Linda Black led the Patriotic Song. There were no visiting Rotarians (where has Art Rangel been lately?) and no Rotarians with guests, but we sang the Welcome Song anyway with Lyn Caron doing the honors. Is it "stay" or "stray" in the Welcome Song – anyone know?
Linda Black gave another reminder about the District Conference letting us all know that it is not too late to make arrangements to come out to the conference. Kathy Haworth is planning on having President Captain Bill walk the plank at the Demotion Party on June 26th. Craig Ferre is still looking for applications for the student exchange trip heading to Japan this summer. Anne Murakami is participating in the Relay for Life on May 15th and she reminded us all that there is still time to make a pledge. She will be teaming up with Rotoract members and she would appreciate any help in the way of donations or participation that we can give her.
The Book is at Deano's Motel at 3868 Sepulveda Boulevard - stop by and say hi to Bill.
Fines were dispensed with a cold precision that a President can only develop after a few months on the job. Cy Pierce was fined $20 for not signing the book even though he was at Deano's twice in the same week. John Cluff had a birthday and was fined a buck a year thus parting with a Ulysses S. Grant. Buffy Francuz spent $180 for a light bulb for her Acura and was lit up for $20 for acting like the government. Harold Hanslmair is getting repeat business due to the Prez's bad luck with cars so a $20 recognition was his reward.
Is it Fellows, Fellas, or Fellers?
Today Cartwright Sheppard and Darlene Kiyan received Paul Harris awards presented to them by Carmela Raack. Cartwright received his 7th Paul Harris award and named his sister, Mary Helen Boothby,
as a Paul Harris Fellow. Darlene was getting her first award and so she too is a Paul Harris Fellow. This brings up an interesting question - is "fellow" strictly a masculine term or can it be applied to both men and women?
The Rotary International website was of no help only giving information on how to contribute and describing the different levels of giving like sapphire level and ruby level.
I searched the internet high and low, and the consensus opinion is that "fellow" is a gender neutral term and can be applied to men and women alike. So Mary Helen and Darlene truly are Paul Harris Fellows along with nearly all of the other members of our Club as we continue our efforts to be a 100% Paul Harris club. Good work "Fellows" and remember to make a donation to the Foundation to increase our chances of receiving grant money next year.
Our speaker for the day was Daniel Armstrong, founder of Find A Tree. Daniel recounted the experiences in Africa that got him started with his organization and then told us about the successes he has had helping at risk young adults and teenagers in the Los Angeles area. It was a very inspirational and positive presentation.
Paul Knoll offered up a bit more wisdom to close the meeting with an emphasis on the end of "Our Marsupial Leader's Reign."
Have a great week Rotarians.

A Note from Carmela Raack
Club members have been very supportive in our Rotary Foundation giving this year. We will have another 6 or more Paul Harris Fellows given to spouses, grandchildren or others and the club is almost a 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club.
Most of the club has been generous in their support but there are still some Rotarians who have not contributed this year. President-Elect Linda Black has written several grants that will multiply our donations back to Culver City but we need the support of the club members to receive these grants.
To help encourage checks or billing, for every $100 donated a Rotarian will have a chance to win a $1,000 Paul Harris Fellow. The drawing will be at the club meeting on May 12th.
Following the two Paul Harris Fellows presented last week, donations were increased by $450! We are almost to our goal! Contact Linda or me with your contribution.
Thanks to all,
Carmela Raack

Relay for Life
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is just around the corner -- May 15, I believe. Last year I chaired the event for
our club and participated in the Relay, representing our club. I will be honored to do it again this year and I ask for your sponsorship to support this fine organization. And I will welcome anyone who wants to walk as well -- last year we had several members walking and we had a nice time. Chris King will be organizing the Interact and Rotoract clubs in this event and we hope to join them to form a great Relay Team!! I thank you in advance for your sponsorship and participation. I will be contacting you at our meetings, or, you can also email me with your pledge -- any amount will be most welcome.
My email address is annmiya@hotmail.com. Or you can also call me with a pledge 310-717-6641. THANK YOU TO ALL!!! Ann Murakami
