Starfish Pack Program Helps feed Hungry Kids in Aldergrove

In the Spring of 2015, The Aldergrove Rotary Club launched the Starfish Pack Program to help feed hungry children on weekends. Starting April 10th and running every Friday until the end of school in June, selected Aldergrove students from Parkside and Shortreed Elementary Schools are taking home a Starfish Pack full of weekend food.

The concept was brought to British Columbia two years ago by the Abbotsford Rotary Club who named it The Starfish Program after the well-known Parable of the Starfish, which illustrates the importance of helping even just one life in need.

Recognizing that this was an excellent way to help needy families in Aldergrove too, the Rotary Club of Aldergrove explored the feasibility of starting a similar program here.

In four short months, participating schools, local grocery stores, volunteers, support groups and community leaders came together to organize Aldergrove’s first Starfish Pack Program, which is running for a trial period at two elementary schools, Parkside and Shortreed, between Spring Break and summer holidays, 2015.

Funding for the spring semester trial period has been generously donated by individuals and companies and the Rotary Club of Aldergrove.

How Can You Help? You can help keep the Program going next year.

The cost of providing the weekend backpack to one child for a school year is $525 - Please consider sponsoring one or more backpacks and more hungry kids will be fed weekends for the September to June school year.
