Each year the Rotary Club of Eagle River Area awards four $1000.00 scholarships in some combination of Academic Scholarships and the Gordon Bordine Vocational Scholarships to qualified graduating seniors from Chugiak High School, Eagle River High School or Home Schooled in the Eagle River Area for the upcoming academic year.

Academic Scholarships

This scholarship will be awarded to a qualified student(s) admitted to a four year degree program leading to a Bachelor of Arts or Science or equivalent.

The Gordon Bordine Vocational Scholarships

This scholarship will be awarded to a qualified student(s) enrolling or admitted to a program of study leading to a skill or trade.  Although not required, this program may be conducted at a traditional college or university.

Award Criteria

The Rotary Club of Eagle River Area Scholarship Committee will review the applications and evaluate them in accordance with the following criteria:

The Scholarship Committee, in reviewing your application, will evaluate it using several criteria on a 1 to 10 scale.  These criteria are as follows:

  1. Academic Excellence
    A minimum 2.5 GPA is required.  Please provide a certified transcript of your high school academic record to date.
  2. School and Community Service
    Participation in school and community activities including years involved, and hours spent, in particular activity, leadership demonstrated, contribution/impact within organization, special awards, and individual projects completed is vitally important.  Please describe these activities and include any awards or certificates earned with your application.
  3. Personal Essay
    Please describe your goals, aspirations and personal character and philosophy in a personal essay of between 500 and 1000 words.  Overall theme/content, grammar, creativity in developing ideas, and clarity will be considered in the evaluation.
  4. Budget Analysis
    Financial need is not a consideration in the award of these scholarships.  However, it is important for us to know that you have considered the costs associated with your education.  Include an anticipated and realistic budget analysis for your years in school in your application.  For those in one of the high schools your high school guidance counselor may be able to assist you.  You may include this scholarship in your budget.
  5. Acceptance
    Include a Letter of Acceptance to at least one college, university or vocational school.
