October 15 Meeting

Great presentation by Pete Risse the Director of the Chugiak-Eagle River UAA Campus
Guests today were both past ER Rotarians, Mike Fuller and Pete Risse. We are hoping to bring both of them back to the club soon.
Pete has been working on a new member orientation packet for our club to satisfy a District Leadership Academy assignment. He has posted it on the website on the home page under "Downloads". Check it out and give him feedback.
We unanimously passed a motion by Meg to send 2 Eagle River kids to winter orientation. That way if one of the Alaska kids drops out, our second student can easily step in and take their exchange. Without winter orientation a student can not do this. Since Debra, our YEO, is unable to attend winter orientation it will not cost our club anymore than we already have budgeted.
Eric announced that Thanksgiving is approaching quickly and once again our club will put together a basket for a family in Eagle River. So, if you are shopping, through some extra food in your cart, because he will be collecting soon.
Brad reminded everyone that it is not too soon to register for next year's District Conference in May. It will be held at the Captain Cook where rooms will be available at $129, which is a great rate. The website is http://rotary5010conference.org/anchorage2010/.
Martin announced that the next Board Meeting will be October 27 at 6:30pm at Pizza Man.
Pete Risse from UAA's Eagle River Campus gave a great presentation of the relevant and practical ways that they are using the Eagle River Campus to help people find jobs. The campus has a less academic focus and more vocational. They have a Workforce Development program, they run the Alaska Fisheries Observer Training Center from the ER Campus, do BP's tech employee screening, and run a program called Non-Destructive Testing. People who come out of these programs get jobs right away according to Pete. It sounds as if they are very busy over there.
Doug won $10 in split the pot!
