May 6 Meeting

Great presentation given by Curtis McQueen, CEO of our local native corporation, Eklutna.
NO MEETING ON MAY 12 DUE TO DISTRICT CONFERENCE
This week our guests were Curtis McQueen and his assistant Kathy Stall. Kaye Zwiacher was our Rotarian guest and Katja, our exchange student attended the meeting as well.
If you are out and about, please invite Katja to go along with you, she went hiking with Mary Ann last week and enjoyed it. Ask her about the chickens she saw next time you see her!
Dr. Kaye Zwiacher from the Wasilla Nooners club made a donation to the club so that she could announce her new practice opening in Eagle River at the Mat-Su Regional/Capstone Building. Her practice is General Psychiatry.
Our club has been very busy. Mary Ann, Bobby and Tonya all attended the School Business Partnership luncheon on May 3. CHS nominated our club for an award which we did not win, however, we were featured in their best practices book.
On May 4th & 5th, mock interviews were conducted at CHS. Martha headed it up and Pete, Steve, Debra, Owen, Doug & Bobby all participated. Great work!
Since I am writing this after the weekend, Highway Clean-Up took place this weekend on the 8th. We had a delicious breakfast at Piccolino's and then had a great turnout for clean-up. I hope I don't miss anyone, but Dog headed up the project and Jake, Mary Ann, Mike Fuller, Owen, Pete, Alan Mulcahy, Bob Evans, Bobby, Martha and her grandsons, Brad and Tonya were all there and what a beautiful day it was!
Upcoming Projects:
- May 22 - Eagle River Nature Center Clean-up from 11am-2pm followed by a fireside at Martha's out by the Nature Center.
-May 22- Shoot for a Smile, the Rotaplast fundraiser at Grouse Ridge Shooting Range. The shoot begins at 2:30pm and dinner starts at 6pm. You don't have to attend the shoot to go to dinner to support Rotaplast.
Project Amigo is coming along, we are still trying to round up more people to come with us. Please see the story below for the latest update.
Curtis McQueen, Eklutna's CEO was our guest speaker and he brought all kinds of maps and plans to show us. Eklutna is 38 years old as a native corporation and has 178 sharehholders, all from 6 families. Eklutna has 15 employees in their office.
They have several projects in the works. Once Powder Ridge is sold, they will create a subdivision across the street from it called Powder Reserve that will have 1560 units. They have a booming gravel business and have plans to relocate their main office to across the street from Fred Meyer.
Curtis brought in a huge photo of the Chugiak/Eagle River area that had all of Eklutna's land holdings on them. It was very interesting to study.
