August 6 Meeting

Apparently the rain kept everyone away today becuase there were only 8 members in attendance.  Luckily we had 4 exciting guests:  Marianne Kerr, the 4-H and Youth Developement Agent with UAF who was our guest speaker today, Deb and Alan Mulcahy, and Alan's prize winning chicken named Champ.

Happy Buck Highlights:  Brad leaves this Friday night for his Rotoplast mission.  The group still does not have their visas for Brazil, but they are hoping they will very soon.

Announcements: 

• Pete spoke with our Assist. DG Jack Timm this week who also happens to be one of the Susitna Club members who is partnering with us for Project Amigo.  Pete let him know that we have a lot of people interested from our club (see last week's meeting summary if you don't know what I am talking about) and it sounds like they might not have that many, so it may still work out to partner with them or we might just end up having our own mission.
• Brad got an email from our outbound student, Kate Frederick, who arrived in Demark last week.  Sounds like she is doing very well, seemed happy with her host family and is getting ready for school which will be starting soon.
• Eric Tomsen, our Ambassadorial Scholar, has settled in to life in New Zealand and has started working on a project for his master's degree.  Pete will send around more info on his project.  Also, Pete is working on a meeting where we video conference with Erik.  Very cool.

Guest Speaker:  Marianne Kerr discussed the history of 4-H, how it is organized under the UAF umbrella and spoke about different programs that are available to kids.  Kate Frederick, our exchange student participates in 4-H, as does Alan Mulcahy.  Alan is involved with two different 4-H clubs:  one for shooting and one for animals.  Alan showed us his rifle and his shooting uniform and also introduced us to Champ, the chicken.  Champ won every prize that was possible for him to win at last year's fair.
