What a fun meeting we had today and it was great to see Jake.

Pete opened the meeting today by welcoming Jake back.  This was Jake's first meeting after his fall.  He looked terrific and said he was healing quite well.

Visitors:  Els Crissafulli, Jake's wife, joined us, along with a past and hopefully future Eagle River Rotarian, Dentist Mike Fuller.  Steve Stribling, an Anchorage East Rotarian and our guest speaker was also present.

Brad was back from a great Rotaplast trip.  See the website www.rotaplast.org for more info and pics.

Annoucements:

  • Katja, our exchange student from Denmark is settling in to home and school.  No one from the club has met her yet, but hopefully soon.
  • Our ambassadorial scholar's grandfather, Tiny Tomsen, presented us with a check for $1000 this week.
  • Doug has scheduled Road Clean-up for September 12 at 10am, we will discuss the possibility of breakfast at 8:30am at Johanns.
  • Karla is looking for people to help with the garage sale.  There are still several slots open on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17 & 18.  Email her at joe@alaska.net if you can help.

Jim Palmer came up with a new fundraising idea for next spring that was discussed at the board meeting.  He would like to organize a committee to start working on a miniature golf tournament.  He has seen it done in the past and there are all sorts of ideas as to how it could work.  It sounds like a great idea and if we could come up with a unique idea for Eagle River that would be great.

Now for the excitement:  Our guest speaker Steve Stribling hosts The Big Alaska Show on Saturday mornings from 9-10am on 750 am KFQD.  The show's motto is "Big Stories, Big Prizes and Big Lies".  He recorded us and did a short show that perhaps he will use on his real show, I am not quite sure.  We all lhad lots of fun and he interviewed Brad about his Rotaplast trip.  Steve would like to do more to provide PR for Rotary and this was a good start.  It was a very different meeting.

Pete won Split the Pot - again!

Next week's guest is Marc Hoffmeister, he led a team of Wounded Warriors up Denali and will tell us about his trip.  Should be interesting.

See you next week - Tonya
