August 13 Meeting

We had three guests today.  Heather & Nat Parker joined us, along with our guest speaker, Kent Briske, the Executive Director of the Alaska WildBird Rehabilitation Center.

Karla announced that the dates for our garage sale have been set.  She has scheduled it for September 18 & 19 at Joy Lutheran Church.  We will have drop off times for people's belongings on September 17 (noon - 3pm) and the 18th (anytime).  She is planning on being open all day on the 18th and half day on the 19th.  The proceeds of the garage sale will benefit Polio Plus and will go towards our annual $1000 that each club is being asked to give for Polio Plus for the years 08-10.

Eric and I gave an update on Brad and Debbie's Rotaplast mission in Brazil.  Although the 37 boxes of medical supplies and equipment took an extra 2 days to clear customs, all of their supplies arrived just in time for surgery.  They have been working very hard.  To follow the blog of their mission go to: http://rotaplast.typepad.com/missions/ 

Our guest speaker, Kent Briske, gave a great presentation on what the Alaska WildBird Rehab Center does in the valley.  He brought a saw-whet owl with him and had him out on a leash.  They are always looking for volunteers and in fact all of the center's birds live with volunteers.  Their website is: http://www.akwildbirdrehab.org/ .  They are holding a dessert and liqueurs fundraiser with entertainment provided by Mr. Whitekeys on October 17 at Settler's Bay Lodge in Wasilla.  The club gave Kent a $100 donation and since he has a matching grant, that will turn into $200.

Jim Palmer won split the pot and donated it to the Alaska WildBird Rehab Center.
