DG1920-16 Foreign Youth Exchange Student This was a Youth Exchange District Grant for Francesca Dominic from Catania, Sicily, Italy for the school year 2019/20 at Boone HS. She was active in Interact and attended RYLA during February. Our club enjoyed her numerous visits to our club as well as her bio presentation to the club in December 2019. Francesca will return to her home in Italy at the end of this school year. Total cost of grant was $1,750, DDF was $1,000.
District Grants
The District Grant to support Gift of Life for 2 children was not implemented. Hospital could not fit the operations into their schedule. DDF was returned to the District to support DDF shortfall in District.
DG1718-18RYLA This is the third year that the Rotary Club of Orlando has provided scholarships to RYLA Camp. RYLA, Rotary Youth leadership Award, is a 3 day program teaching team building and leadership and includes numerous activities supporting these areas; ropes course, speech competition, archery, canoeing, evening campfires and more. Awardees were; Parker Fluke, Boone High School; Huan Nguyen, Boone High School; Savannah Partlow, Boone High School; Brogan Tagman, Boone High School; Alexis Tehrani, Boone High School. Scholarship cost is $250 each. Total cost of grant was $1,250, DDF was $1,180.
DG1718-19 Interact Scholarship The Rotary Club of Orlando Interact Scholarship provides financial assistance to Orange County, Florida high school seniors who plan to attend and have been accepted to a school of higher learning within the United States. The scholarship is available to students of either the Interact Club of William R. Boone High School or the Interact Club of Jones High School. The student must have a 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 system, provide a written essay and sit for a personal interview by RCO Rotarians. Reid Marlett of Boone High School was the recipient of this year’s scholarship and will attend University of Florida. Total cost of grant was $1,000, DDF was $1,000.
DG1617-10 Ivey Lane Food Pantry RCO conducted a food drive on November 3 & 10, Rotarians contributed 135 food items valued at $326 plus $32 cash. On Nov 25 a Rotarian and Ivey Lane personnel purchased 204 food items for $247.60. On Dec $120 was received from a raffle for food. On Jan 19 & 26, Rotarians contributed 134 food items valued $266. On Mar 8, 198 food items were purchased for $255.41. Difference between tape and reimbursement was a cash contribution of $4.87. Also on Mar 8, 115 food items were purchased with cash contributions for $152. Total food items collected was 786. Cash purchases: DDF $500, contributed cash $156.87; Food items value $592. Total $1,248.87. All food items were placed in Ivey Lane Elementary Food Pantry.
DG1617-17 Interact Scholarship The scholarship was not awarded this since no student qualified for this award. The DDF$1000 was subsequently awarded to our outstanding Global Grant for the Clinic in Chameleon in Honduras.

DG1516-05 A literacy project at Eccleston Elementary for the 1st Grade. Most of the 117 each 1st grade students at Eccleston are considered at-risk and come from a challenged socio-economic community in west Orlando. On Monday, Feb 22, 2016, the Rotarians assisted the representatives from Orange County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol at the school where the 1st graders were introduced to Walter Farley’s book, Little Black, A Pony, and a real horse. Following a chance to look and touch the horse, each child was presented their own personal copy of the book. On Thursday, Feb 25, 2016, the Rotarians chaperoned the 1st grade class on a field trip to the Orange County Sheriff’s barn at Grand Cypress Equestrian Ctr. The WHT personnel then treated the students to discussions about the horses at five stations; (1) grooming, (2) feeding, (3) shoeing, (4) saddles and (5) reading. Each child then received a second book by Walter Farley, Little Black Goes to the Circus. Total cost of grant was $1,660, DDF was $100.

On Friday, January 23, 2015 the Rotarians assisted the representatives from Orange County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol at the school where the 1st graders were introduced to Walter Farley’s book, Little Black, A Pony, and a real horse. Following a chance to touch the horse, each child was presented their own personal copy of the book. On Tuesday, February 24, 2015, the Rotarians chaperoned the 1st grade class on a field trip to the Orange County Sheriff’s barn in Clarcona. The HTLP personnel then treated the students to discussions about the horses at four stations; (1) grooming, (2) feeding, (3) shoeing and (4) saddles. Each child then received a second book by Walter Farley, Little Black Goes to the Circus. Total cost of grant was $1,068, DDF was $200.
DSG1314-03 A literacy project for 51 each 4th grade students at Ivey Lane Elementary School in west Orlando. Most of the children are considered at-risk and come from a challenged socio-economic community. The students at Ivey Lane Elementary, 4th Grade, an at-risk school in west Orlando, were given their own personal copy of Walter Farley’s Black Stallion prior to a field trip at Arabian Knights on December 6, 2013. The field trip to Arabian Knights was chaperoned RCO Rotarians and consisted of a demonstration of horseback riding and a segment in which rider enacted part of the story of the Black Stallion. Total cost of grant was $678, DDF was $500.

On Tuesday, January 17, 2012, the Rotarians assisted the representatives from Orange County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol at the school where the 1st graders were introduced to Walter Farley’s book, Little Black, A Pony, and a real horse. Following a chance to touch the horse, each child was presented their own personal copy of the book. On Tuesday, January 24, 2012, the Rotarians chaperoned the 1st grade class on a field trip to the Arabian Knights stables in Kissimmee. The HTLP personnel then treated the students to discussions about the horses at four stations; (1) grooming, (2) feeding, (3) shoeing and (4) saddles as well as a short program of trick riding and entertainment. Each child then received a second book by Walter Farley, Little Black Goes to the Circus. Total cost of grant was $750. DDF was $725.
DSG1011-01 In January 2011, 3 RCO members with other medical volunteers, traveled to The Centro Medico Hope of Chamalecon, Honduras, a nonprofit organization under Honduras law, serving a population of 100,000 inhabitants in the State of Cortes. These natives are at risk both financially and health wise. Over the past six years’ members of the Rotary Club of Orlando have made twelve visits to the clinic to provide medical services. This trip included medical services; Dermatology, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Family Medicine, Ob-Gyn and Cardiology. Equipment delivered this trip included; an EKG machine, an ultrasound machine, blood sugar monitors, blood pressure monitors, printers and other supplies. The grant and trip was led by Oswald Saavedra. Total cost of grant was $7,978. DDF was $4,000.
Friends Forever, Feb 2007. This project involved hosting 10 youth from Northern Ireland, 5 Catholic and 5 Protestants to build their friendships. The program lasted 10-14 days in which the teens were forced to live, work and play together. Orlando Rotarians entertained them in their homes and businesses. The 10 youth enjoyed our local tourist attractions, our culture, our government and our economy while continuing to go through group sessions of problem solving and group resolution. Guiding forces behind this project were Dick Crabtree and Tom Olsen. Total cost was $18,000, DDF was $1,400. In kind gifts; housing, meals and tourist attractions are included in total.
Ivey Lane Elementary 5th Grade, April 2007. A field trip to Tallahassee, Florida where thirty students took buses to our state capital to observe our government and learn the history of the State of Florida. Club President Jim Stowers worked with Ivey Lane Elementary personnel to cover the remaining cost of this trip for these students. Total cost was $1,578, DDF was $1,578.
