DG1516-05 A literacy project at Eccleston Elementary for the 1st Grade. Most of the 117 each 1st grade students at Eccleston are considered at-risk and come from a challenged socio-economic community in west Orlando. On Monday, Feb 22, 2016, the Rotarians assisted the representatives from Orange County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol at the school where the 1st graders were introduced to Walter Farley’s book, Little Black, A Pony, and a real horse. Following a chance to look and touch the horse, each child was presented their own personal copy of the book. On Thursday, Feb 25, 2016, the Rotarians chaperoned the 1st grade class on a field trip to the Orange County Sheriff’s barn at Grand Cypress Equestrian Ctr. The WHT personnel then treated the students to discussions about the horses at five stations; (1) grooming, (2) feeding, (3) shoeing, (4) saddles and (5) reading. Each child then received a second book by Walter Farley, Little Black Goes to the Circus. Total cost of grant was $1,660, DDF was $100.

On Thursday, February 18, 2016, the Rotarians chaperoned the 4th grade class on a field trip to the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida. Wild Horse Tales personnel then treated the students to a program of horsemanship, riding skills and western type entertainment along with the presentation reenacting parts of The Black Stallion. Each student had previously received a book by Walter Farley, The Black Stallion. Total cost of grant was $1,874, DDF was $100.

On Thursday, March 3, 2016, the Rotarians chaperoned the 1st grade class on a field trip to the Grand Cypress Equestrian Center. The HTLP personnel then treated the students to discussions about the horses at four stations; (1) grooming, (2) feeding, (3) shoeing and (4) saddles. DG1516-14 RYLA This is the first year that the Rotary Club of Orlando has
provided scholarships to RYLA Camp. RYLA, Rotary Youth Leadership Award, is a 3-day program teaching team building and leadership and includes numerous activities supporting these areas; ropes course, speech competition, archery, canoeing, evening campfires and more. Awardees were; Bridget Hartwig-Boone, Calvin Gardner-Edgewater, Marceia Goris-Lake Brantley, Jonah Wilson-Olympia, Rachel Romaine-Boone and Kelsey Guthrie-Bishop Moore. Scholarship cost is $250 each. Total cost of grant was $1,500, DDF was $1,500.
DG1516-15 The Rotary Club of Orlando Interact Scholarship provides financial assistance to Orange County, Florida high school seniors who plan to attend and have been accepted to a school of higher learning within the United States. The scholarship is available to students of either the Interact Club of William R. Boone High School or the Interact Club of Jones High School. The student must have a 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 system, provide a written essay and sit for a personal interview by RCO Rotarians. Isaiah Rutledge of Boone High School was the recipient of this year’s scholarship and will attend UCLA in California. Total cost of grant was $1,000, DDF was $1,000.
