DSG1314-03 A literacy project for 51 each 4th grade students at Ivey Lane Elementary School in west Orlando. Most of the children are considered at-risk and come from a challenged socio-economic community. The students at Ivey Lane Elementary, 4th Grade, an at-risk school in west Orlando, were given their own personal copy of Walter Farley’s Black Stallion prior to a field trip at Arabian Knights on December 6, 2013. The field trip to Arabian Knights was chaperoned RCO Rotarians and consisted of a demonstration of horseback riding and a segment in which rider enacted part of the story of the Black Stallion. Total cost of grant was $678, DDF was $500.
DSG1314-04 A literacy project for 65 each 1st grade students at Ivey Lane Elementary School in west Orlando. Most of the children are considered at-risk and come from a challenged socio-economic community. Rotarians assisted the representatives from Orange County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol at the school where the 1st graders were introduced to Walter Farley’s book, Little Black, A Pony, and a real horse. Following a chance to look and touch the horse, each child was presented their own personal copy of the book. On Thursday, March 13th, 65 first grade students from Ivy Lane Elementary were chaperoned by RCO volunteers to Orange County Sheriff’s horse stables for the Horse Tales literacy program including; (1) grooming, (2) feeding, (3) shoeing and (4) saddles. Each child then received a second book by Walter Farley, Little Black Goes to the Circus. Total cost of grant was $987, DDF was $600.
DSG1314-07 The Rotary Club of Orlando Interact Scholarship provided financial assistance to Orange County, Florida high school senior who plan to attend and have been accepted to a school of higher learning within the State of Florida. The scholarship is available to students of either the Interact Club of William R. Boone High School or the Interact Club of Jones High School. The student must have a 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 system. Demetrius Mullins of Jones High School was the recipient of this year’s scholarship and will attend Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach. This was the 1st scholarship established in District 6980 using DDF and was initiated by Roger Jacobson. Total cost of grant was $1,500, DDF was $1,500.

On Friday, January 23, 2015 the Rotarians assisted the representatives from Orange County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol at the school where the 1st graders were introduced to Walter Farley’s book, Little Black, A Pony, and a real horse. Following a chance to touch the horse, each child was presented their own personal copy of the book. On Tuesday, February 24, 2015, the Rotarians chaperoned the 1st grade class on a field trip to the Orange County Sheriff’s barn in Clarcona. The HTLP personnel then treated the students to discussions about the horses at four stations; (1) grooming, (2) feeding, (3) shoeing and (4) saddles. Each child then received a second book by Walter Farley, Little Black Goes to the Circus. Total cost of grant was $1,068, DDF was $200.
DSG1415-10 A literacy project for 32 each 4th grade students at Ivey Lane
Elementary School in west Orlando. Most of the children are considered at-risk and come from a challenged socio-economic community. On Tuesday, February 17, 2015, the Rotarians chaperoned the 4th grade class on a field trip to the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida. The Horse Tales Literacy Project personnel then treated the students to a program of horsemanship, riding skills and western type entertainment along with the presentation reenacting parts of The Black Stallion. Each student had previously received a book by Walter Farley, The Black Stallion. Total cost of grant was $565, DDF was $100. Ivey Lane Book Fairs As an extension of our literacy effort, the RCO provided funds to have two separate book fairs at Ivey Lane. Both book fairs were managed by Scholastic Books, Ivey Lane personnel and Orlando Rotarians. Each child, PK -5, received a book valued at $5 and the teachers received $20 to purchased books for their class. Book Fair #1 was held October 19-22, 2015 and the cost was $1,600. Students served were 353. Book Fair #2 was held March 14-17, 2016 and the cost was $1,734. Students served were 350.
