DSG1213-07 A literacy project for 52 each 1st grade students at Ivey Lane Elementary School in west Orlando. Most of the children are considered at-risk and come from a challenged socio-economic community. On Monday, February 4, 2013 the Rotarians assisted the representatives from Orange County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol at the school where the 1st graders were introduced to Walter Farley’s book, Little Black, A Pony, and a real horse. Following a chance to touch the horse, each child was presented their own personal copy of the book. On Tuesday, February 5, 2013, the Rotarians chaperoned the 1st grade class on a field trip to the Orange County Sheriff’s barn in Clarcona. The HTLP personnel then treated the students to discussions about the horses at four stations; (1) grooming, (2) feeding, (3) shoeing and (4) saddles as well as a short program of trick riding and entertainment. Each child then received a second book by Walter Farley, Little Black Goes to the Circus. Total cost of grant was $771, DDF was $250.
DSG1213-08 A literacy project for 50 each 4th grade students at Ivey Lane Elementary School in west Orlando. Most of the children are considered at-risk and come from a challenged socio-economic community. The students at Ivey Lane Elementary, 4th Grade, an at-risk school in west Orlando, were given their own personal copy of Walter Farley’s Black Stallion prior to a field trip at Arabian Knights on December 4, 2012. The field trip to Arabian Knights was chaperoned by the three teachers and four Rotarians and consisted of a demonstration of horseback riding and a segment in which a rider enacted part of the story of the Black Stallion. Total cost of grant was $705, DDF was $250.
DSG1213-13 The Rotary Club of Rotary (RCO) purchased 70 each $50 Book Awards for Frontline Outreach (FLO), a 501(c)3 located in a socio-economic challenged rural west Orlando neighborhood. Sixty-four (64) awards were used to recognized individuals 5-14 years old who had met achievement levels in “Read and Succeed” literacy program. The emphasis on this program is to make reading a rewarding family event. The books will be the start of the child’s own personal library. The remaining 6 awards will be awarded as students achieve the “Read and Succeed” requirements. On April 25, 2013, three of the students, their parents and reading mentor attended the RCO meeting to receive their certificate. On April 26, 2013 at a FLO Volunteer breakfast, all students were recognized and receive their awards. During the months of May and June the students will redeem certificates at Barnes & Noble and select age appropriate books. Total cost of grant was $3,395, DDF was $3,395.
