The Four Way Test:

The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do:
1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

4-Way Pact

Doc Baker gave a presentation on the 4-Way Test to demonstrate that the spirits behind the words were fine, but they lacked personal accountability. "Am I truthful?" is much more meaningful and forceful that "Is it the truth?"

Doc proposed the "4-Way Pact". It was still in the form of 4 questions, however, John Selke, a Board Member, suggested it be put in a more positive way. The 4-Way Pact became and update of the "Golden Rule" rather than a resolution of business problems as the 4-Way Test historically started out.

Doc's version of the new 4-Way Test was published in the Rotarian Magazine. He received many comments from all over the world about the timeliness and appropriate change in the wording, but Rotary International was not interested in changing decades of tradition. The Rotary Club of Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates uses the 4-Way Pact at the beginning of every meeting after the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Four Way PACT
In the way I interact with others.

Personal Accountability with Courage and Truth

1. I will have the COURAGE to tell the whole TRUTH.
2. I will be KIND in the way that I tell it.
3. I will be FAIR and not seek selfish advantage.
4. I will have OPEN HEART and an OPEN MIND.
