Dr. William J. “Bill” Byrne, Jr., 85, passed away on February 6, 2025, at Brandel at Covenant Living of Northbrook. A man of intellect, integrity, and generosity, Bill was deeply loved by his brother Dennis Byrne (Barbara) and two sisters, Mary Ann Shaw (Buzz) and Catherine Kleeman (Jim), as well as his extended family of nieces, and nephews, Kati Spaniak Ciesla (Michael), Donald Byrne (Monica), Ken Shaw (Linda), Sara Shaw Buffett (Perry), Susan Shaw Gleason (Chris), Brian Kleeman (Melody) and Karen Kleeman Jones (Vince). Known as the “Favorite Uncle,” he was cherished for his wit, warmth, and unwavering support. A dedicated civic leader, Bill served as President of the Association at Covenant Living, Past President of the Rotary Club of Northbrook, and a leader in the United Way of the North Shore. His service earned him numerous honors, including The Northbrook Civic Award, Rotarian of the Year, and the Paul Harris Fellow Award from Rotary International. Born and raised in Chicago and Northfield, Bill earned a degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Detroit, followed by a Master’s and Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA from Northwestern University. A memorial Mass will be held on March 8, 2025, at St. Norbert & Our Lady of the Brook Church, 1809 Walters Avenue in Northbrook, with visitation at 9:15 AM and Mass at 10:00 AM.
