Hi everyone, here are updates on the Coat Drive after yesterday’s sorting with RC Glenview.
The volume was noticeably lower this week. While Gary had his typical large volume from library and village hall, and Debbie and Brian had a good number of coats as well, the locations that John and Elke pickup at had zero coats. I cleared out North Shore Place on Sunset Ridge, which yielded -- mostly boxes of shoes. ☹ I also checked in with Wendy at Northbrook Park District and she didn’t have any either. Glenview Sunrise barrels yielded only a small number.
The yield this week was only 65 winter coats – our smallest number so far.
Two Men and a Truck will pick up on Monday and deliver 35 to Stock the Shelves in Wilmette in advance of their December distribution, and 30 to World Relief’s western suburb office in Carol Stream.
Total winter coats distributed as of tomorrow: 346. Plus 4-5 boxes of hats/gloves/scares/boots.
Week 5 distribution will be split between Connections for the Homeless and World Relief Chicago office.
Week 6 (Post Christmas) distribution is TBD and dependent on what we yield next week. We know that PADS will get a small number of those coats.
IMPORTANT NOTES for barrel folks . . .
Reminder that I will be out of town next weekend helping my daughter move back from her New York internship to Boston for her last semester. The Glenview Rotarians will be doing the sort as usual on Saturday and I’ll get everything set up for them before I leave town.
CAN ALL FIVE OF YOU DROPOFF AT HOLY CROSS ON THURSDAY AT 3 p.m.? If not, I will work with you individually on alternate drop offs. Implications: To maximize coats for the weekend, if you can pick up from barrels later on Wednesday or on Thursday before you drop off, that would be ideal.
OTHER HELP NEEDED . . .
I e-mailed with John Cavanaugh about the 4 barrels at Glenbrook North and 4 barrels at District 28, because I thought they were “new” since they weren’t on the schedule last year. He said they have been there many years . . . and that they drop at Northbrook Park District. But they haven’t dropped at Park District because I was just there. Can someone please volunteer to call both and figure out what their status is with coats, barrels, etc?” Please “reply” all first so everyone knows who is taking this task. BTW, it is OK if they drop at Northbrook Park District. I can get them from there. Here are the contact names and numbers that John C. shared with me.

Gary, I was at the library yesterday and the west vestibule barrel was very full, so I just cleared it out since I was going to Holy Cross this morning. The coats are already in Deerfield and ready for next weekend.
Elke thanks for your efforts to get Rotarians to bring coats to meetings.

Up to 169 million tons of unused food is wasted in the European Union every year, and only about 40 percent of Italians take home their uneaten restaurant food.
Working with the office of agriculture and food in the Piedmont region, the Rotary Club of Acqui Terme launched a project in April to encourage people to take home their leftovers.
It offers recyclable and compostable boxes and wine bags to restaurants, bed and breakfasts, and farmhouses.
Rotarians enlist members of the hospitality industry to reduce food waste and develop awareness of the value of quality foods produced by local farmers, says Giacomo Guerrina, immediate past president of the club.
Mexico
The Rotary Club of Guadalajara Internacional in March began training girls from the city’s underserved communities in the Korean martial art of taekwondo.
The Reconoce Tu Poder, or Recognize Your Power, program has trained dozens of girls, says creator Bertha Sánchez García, the club’s immediate past president. Sánchez García, a brown belt in the discipline, and Zulema Fernández Sariñana, a member of the Rotary Club of Guadalajara, developed a manual and a training regimen with the assistance of Patricia Mariscal Alcalá, an Olympian who is one of Mexico’s most accomplished female taekwondo athletes.
“At the end of the program, each girl knows that she is capable of knocking down her obstacles by breaking a board with a kick,” says Sánchez García.
The effort has been replicated by clubs in two other Mexican towns as well as in India.
United States
The Rotary Club of Conway-Morning, Arkansas, is aiming to deliver birthday messages to every child and young adult in the state’s foster care system.
Between January and September, more than 2,100 cards had been mailed, with an anticipated 3,700 individuals to be reached annually.
“These children already face great uncertainty and disappointments in their lives, and I strongly believe that to consistently remember them on their special day would give them hope to go on, and to show that others around them genuinely care for them,” says Mike Altland, a club member who started the campaign.
A dozen or so Rotarian volunteers coordinate writing and forwarding cards to foster homes with the Arkansas Division of Children and Family Services and The Call, a statewide nonprofit that works with churches to match children with families.
American Greetings, which operates a production facility in the area, donated a supply of cards and envelopes expected to last nearly two years, Altland says.
