Rotary connections are powerful, for both current and future members. After 16 months of lockdown, online business and virtual Rotary meetings, I recently met a longtime client for lunch. The restaurant we chose was quiet that day, and the dining area was empty except for one table.
Our fellow diners were two young men of different races. They seemed to be talking about business as my client and I were seated at a nearby table. We didn’t focus on their conversation until our ears perked up like hyper-alert terriers when we heard one of them say, “Rotary.”
Expanding the conversation
My client is a past president of her Rotary club, and we both began to listen in on the young men’s conversation. One was explaining the motto of Rotary, Service Above Self, and the service projects of his local Rotary club. “I have to introduce myself,” I told my client excitedly. She laughed as I slid out of my chair and moved toward their table.
They looked up, surprised, when I approached them. “Excuse me,” I smiled. “My colleague and I heard you say “Rotary” and we wanted to introduce ourselves.” I pointed to my lapel pin. “We are both Rotary members too!”
Each One, Bring One – and beyond
As it turns out, one of the men, Jeff, is a member of the Rotary club of Lee’s Summit, Missouri. He was discussing Rotary with Jordan, a prospective member.
Jordan grinned in amazement at our Rotary connection, which happens every day for Rotary members across the globe. “Wow!” he said. “You mean people in Rotary just find each other like this?” My client, Jeff, and I each smiled. “We all serve,” I replied. “We are people from all backgrounds, all walks of life, and we all serve our communities.”
That brief exchange was a simple, yet powerful moment of Rotary pride and purpose for three Rotary members. For Jordan, it was an impressive example of the strength of the Rotary network and our capacity to connect people across communities.
Each one of us is a role model for growing Rotary
Since that lunch meeting, Jordan has visited Jeff’s club twice and is on the path to becoming a member. Jeff’s support of the Presidential Initiative, “Each One Bring One” prompted me to reach out to three prospective members.
What if each of us did the same? What if each of us encouraged the formation of a new club? By this time next year, our Rotary network and our capacity to connect people across the globe will be even more powerful. All we need to do, like Jeff, is to be a role model for Each One, Bring One. Find your Jordans and invite them to lunch.

Project Biodiversity+ Program #42: Nevado de Toluca: factory of water, factory of life
The Lerma River-Lake Chapala basin is considered by the federal government of Mexico to be the most important watershed in the country. With its major tributaries, the Laja, Apaseo and Turbio, the Lerma constitutes Mexico's largest river system. In this watershed is the stratovolcano Nevado de Toluca and the world heritage site, the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve.
Ernesto Benítez and Rotarians from clubs in the Lerma River basin will present the endeavors of Rotary in the reforestation projects in Nevado de Toluca, the Sierra Morelos Park forestation, their restoration efforts along the Lerma River and its wetlands, and cleaning the canal insurgent’s wetlands. Those who will be presenting will be members of various Rotary clubs united by the Nevado de Toluca and the Lerma River.
Ernesto’s Bio: Juan Ernesto Benítez Valle completed his professional studies at the Faculty of Law of the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico and at the Faculty of Accounting and Administration of this same Institution. He has a broad career in Rotary, presiding over the Rotaract Club and Rotary Club of Metepec on several occasions; He has served as Assistant Governor and Assistant Governor Coordinator; He has participated as District Director of Protocol in four terms; in 2011 he led the Study Group Exchange Team (IGE) in Missouri and served as District Secretary. In the year 2012-2013 he served as Governor of District 4170; from 2014 to 2016 he served as President of the United Rotary Fund of Mexico, A. C. In the 2018-2019 Rotary year, he served as Advisor to the Public Image Coordination for Area 25A, Chair of the RYLA program for District 4170, and Chair of the Board of Governors for District 4170. He is currently Editor of the Rotary Magazine in Mexico, Chair of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program of District 4170 and Founding President of “Holística”, a company dedicated to Empowerment for Human Development, as well as Training and Consulting to the Public Sector and Private.

Rotary Club of Northbrook’s “Coat Off Your Back” drive has helped to mitigate a local problem in partnership with refugee settling organizations including World Relief Chicago.
“Refugees are settling in the Midwest during our most challenging season, but we can help!” says John Cavanaugh, Rotarian and chair of this annual event.
“So many of us annually sort through and buy updated coats, jackets, and other winter outerwear. This year – as you go through your previous season winterwear - consider donating to Coat Off Your Back! You may also buy new items to donate as well.”

Dear Supporter, Thank you for your support of the Rotary Club of Carol Stream and their Ultimate Golf Raffle last year. Your donation of golf at your course for the 2021 golf season was greatly appreciated and helped the Club in continuing to support our many charitable endeavors both locally and internationally.
Because of the COVID Pandemic , The Rotary Club of Carol Stream lost all of its fundraising opportunities & this was a new virtual way for us to raise much needed monies that fund the many programs that we support in our community including food pantries, scholarships, the homeless, the disenfranchised, the environment and numerous not-for-profits both locally and abroad.
We will again be holding an Ultimate Golf Raffle. Golf foursomes & threesomes (private) at area golf courses will be raffled off at $100 a ticket. …….…..can we count on you again??? Feel free to put any limitations or restrictions that you would normally do for a donation.
The Club will be selling raffle tickets starting in Nov and until sold out. We are reaching out to friends, supporters, and other Rotary Clubs throughout the Chicagoland area. We are offering only 400 tickets and anticipate that they will sell quickly. Prizes will be raffled off during a virtual & live event on February 10, 2022
We are very grateful for any donation!! Through the generosity of people like you, the Club has and will be able to continue to support people who have been adversely affected during the continuing pandemic, unemployment and other adversities.
