Hi Rotary Friends!  
 
I'm writing today to make you aware of a great event that our Prior Lake Rotary Club and I have been involved with.  
 
Over the past several years, we have been actively involved in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda.  On top of many projects and two Global Grants, we've also partnered with the Rotaract Club of Nakivale Refugee Settlement to sponsor the Nakivale Soccer Tournament for Peace.  You can see the attachment that shares more description and pictures of the Tournament.  What I can share anecdotally: 
 
I was able to attend the championship matches on World Refugee Day (6/20) last summer, and it was one of the most powerful experiences I've had in over 20 years of Rotary.  There were around 3,000 spectators watching the matches and cheering on the teams, all in the name of creating positive peace!  This tournament is a great way to promote peace and bring a community of marginalized people together and create some joy in their lives.
 
It takes between $5,000-$6,000 to put on the Tournament, and we'd love your support.  Please share this with your club or any other clubs that you think might be interested in participating.

On February 13th we will be having a Club/Board Meeting where we will be discussing how Community Grants should be structured this year.  As this is the area where we give out the most money, I encourage you to attend and be part of the decision-making process.  BELOW [Attached] you will find the Agenda as well as a description of one possible option.
 
In addition, also attached is a proposal from District 6440 on how Rotary Clubs can get involved locally with Migrant "Take Care" Packages.

6. Grants Discussion: How should Community Grants be structured for this coming year?
a. Same as always: $2000 to $2500 to 10-15 organizations which serve the community
b. Special area of focus – i.e. Food Insecurity, Mental Health, Homeless, Migrants
c. Competitive impact grant – i.e. If our grants budget is $30,000, earmark 50% for a competitive impact grant and the balance ($1000 or so) for sustaining grants for multiple organizations based on criteria to be determined (see attached proposal)
d. Leave as is for this year and ask Community Service Committee to make recommendation by November 2024

Community Grants proposal:

Earmark 50% of our Community Grants budget for a competitive Impact Grant and the balance for sustaining grants for multiple organizations based on criteria to be determined.

Suggested guidelines:

· Competitive grant proposal should focus on maximizing the impact on and to the community served. Projects may include funding from other organizations and sources, but the Northbrook Rotary Competitive Grant should be the lead sponsor.

· Competitive grant proposal should identify a new or expanded project or program that will be sustainable (with funding from other sources since the competitive grant is a one-year grant) after the grant year.

· Competitive grant proposal should identify hands-on volunteer opportunities for Northbrook Rotarians to supplement the grant funding.

· Competitive grant proposal should focus on serving the greater Northbrook community (i.e. focus on Northbrook and adjacent communities
