Polio Update

Hello Rotarians,
 
               Today is “World Polio Day” and I hope you take a few moments to think about how you can work towards the eradication of Wild Polio.  The two main ways to help stomp out this terrible disease is to educate your friends, family and community and/or donate.  If you would like to spread the word on Polio Eradication within your community how about thinking how you can use RILEE at a community event. Remember, your club pays the registration fee and I send your club a $100.00 donation.  Now if donations and RILEE are not your thing then let’s start wearing the Rotary Pin again.  I understand that during the pandemic many of us were much more casual in our dress and some of us worked out of our homes.  However, if you always wear your Rotary Pin then someone might ask about it and then you can spread the word about your Rotary involvement, your Rotary club’s involvement within the community and Rotary’s incredible work around the world including the fight to Eradicate Wild Polio.  I’ve attached a donation form for your use.
                
               Remember the challenges currently available;
  1. Two D6440 Rotarians will match up to $10,000.00 the $100.00 to join the Polio Plus Society.
  2. Complete the registration for RILEE and receive a $100.00 donation form the Garlick family.
  3. The first five (5) Rotarians to make a donation to End Polio of $5,000.00 by the end of November, 2023 will have their donation matched by the Blane Foundation. 
Each donation made to Rotary’s End Polio Now effort is matched 2:1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to maximise its effect. As such, if you give US$10 to the effort, as an example, the amount becomes US$30, and with that, 60 children will be vaccinated in the remaining affected countries. Thank you for everything that you do! We wish you a very successful World Polio Day!

The Final Two Polio Endemic Countries:
Pakistan No new Wild Polio cases reported this week. Three Wild Polio cases reported in 2023.  Twenty Wild Polio cases reported in 2022.   The most recent case had an onset of paralysis on 9/13/23.  No WPV1 Samples and no cVDPV2 Positive Environmental Samples were reported this week in Pakistan. 
 
Afghanistan No new Wild Polio case reported this week.  Six Wild Polio cases reported in 2023 - all from the Nangarhar Province.  Two Wild Polio Cases reported in 2022.   The most recent case had an onset of paralysis on 9/24/23.  No WPV1 Samples and no cVDPV2 Positive Environmental Samples were reported this week in Afghanistan.
