Jeff "downhill slide" Harger opened the meeting and Tim Klein gave an inspiring prayer. Songmeister Steve Kershner led us in a rousing version of " In the good old summer time". Guess the song books don't help!

BRAGS:

- John Schueler attended the LHS awards ceremony and gave out two sets of scholarships.

- Larry Neal visited the WW II museum in New Orleans.

- Jeff Harger bragged about Doug Fendon's help on the February fundraiser.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

- The club received a thank you letter from the Free Spirits and several others who received grants at our Charitable Giving dinner.

- Steve Risley told us that the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind needs a volunteer to read mail to blind man in Libertyville.

- John Schueler updated us on the Festival on August 23rd. Doug Fendon is in charge of layout and Jon Robb is handling marketing and publicity. Get the word out!

- Mother's Trust golf outing is June 13th. See Larry Neal for details.

- The next Feed my Starving Children packing is 5/31 from 9 to 11. Volunteers are still needed. See Pat Hart.

-Membership Contest 2014: Rich's Raiders - 17, Hessenthaler's Henchmen - 6, Tony's Tigers - 3, Hijackers - 3, Captain Bob and Paulson's Peeps - 1 each. The contest ends on June 18th. As Tuck would say " There is still time"!

Mark Houser gave us a quiz on religion. Tough but most got one right!

 

 

 

 

PROGRAM: Rev. Brian Paulson gave a presentation on world religions. Brian wrote a paper on Christianity in the U.S. There is a mish mosh mix of religions. Chicago is second only to Rome for the number of institutions for theological studies.

The world is rapidly changing. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the U.S, and Italy. Budhism is also growing. Social networking is affecting how people relate to their community. There is interfaith dialogue taking place. Shifts happen by generation. Social media is the tool of communication. Religion is a sense of community. Originally was where a group of immigrants went for community. Religion is no longer a place.

The "nones" is the fastest growing segment. Youth are highly educated, single and have a lower rate. 80% of new marriages came from meeting on the web. By 2040 there will be no racial majority in the U.S..
