PROGRAM:

New member Steve "Mac" McKnight introduced us to Dan's House of Hope. Dan's House of Hope started in Appleton Wisconsin to support the 18 to 35 age group with cancer. 72,000 in this age group will get cancer this year. Dan's hopes to raise awareness that this age group gets cancer and it usually involves a late diagnosis. This group of adolescents and young adults (AYA's) is the only age group where the incidents of cancer are growing. Dan passed away at 20 of bone cancer. His parents wanted to start a place for AYAs. Ronald McDonald House is for patients 17 and under.

The number one goal is awareness that this group is the only group where cancer diagnoses are growing. The leading cancer facility is the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston Texas. The group puchased a one bedroom apartment and has served 5 families since last April. The average stay for a family is 2 weeks to 3 months. The cost is $40 per night. The group has made an offer on a home that will serve 7 to 8 familes at once. The near term goal is to build a community home for 14 to 20 families. The fundraising objective is $4.5 million to construct the community home.
