"ROTARY READS DAY" at Libertyville Elementary Schools (November 20, 2008)
Mr. Bob Kastner of the Libertyville Sunrise Rotary Club organized this years' "Rotary Reads Day." The Libertyville elementary schools participating in this year's program were Butterfield, Copeland, Adler, Rockland, and Oak Grove. Along with Mr. Kastner, numerous members from the Libertyville Sunrise Rotary Club plus outside volunteers including Libertyville High School's Interact Club participated in the various reading assignments. The philosophy behind the "Rotary Reads" program is to encourage reading at the early elementary levels (1st through 3rd grade) by the participation of members of the community. Each "reader" reads one of his/her favorite books or reads books supplied by the teachers. Each reader was there to not only read to the students but to also encourage the children to incorporate reading as a fun activity that can be enjoyed throughout their lives. Sunrise Rotarians purchased $50.00 of additional books for each 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade classroom that they visited. Oak Grove School Superintendent, Janice Matthews, said, "I was pleased that Oak Grove was included in the Rotary Reads program for the second year. The teachers appreciated the books purchased for their classrooms by the Sunrise Rotary. This program is especially fun for me since I am a member of the Sunrise Rotary and I see my fellow Rotarians reading to my students. It really brings the community together."
