White’s presentation, on “Peace and the Power of Photography,” will be from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Rotary International auditorium and a short reception will follow the event.

  • A special tribute to ETHS is being planned for our March 12 meeting. District 202 Superintendent Eric Witherspoon will be our speaker that day and we will celebrate the strong historical connection between our club and the high school. We’ll have lots of guests that day and will also be shining a spotlight on our club’s ETHS alumni. Note: This will be a longer meeting than usual -- it will conclude close to 1:30 p.m.

  • On Thursday, March 19, we’ll have our third hands-on volunteer day of the year. This time we will be helping Peer Services, which offers substance-abuse prevention, education and recovery services. On March 19, we will actually visit Peer Services’ offices at 906 Davis Street  to help them process a mass mailing for their Annual Benefit, to be held May 2nd,  that they need to get out...so be ready to help stuff envelopes and provide assistance in organizing this mailing. Again, this volunteer activity will NOT be at RI headquarters! We have limited volunteer slots for this project, so it will be first come-first served. Please let Kat Eiff know if you can make it by no later than Thursday, March 12. You can send an email to Kat at katherine@eobgroup.com. We’ll be on site at Peer Services over the lunch hour -- from noon to 1:15 p.m.

  • Thanks, everyone, for helping us achieve 100 percent participation in giving to the Rotary Foundation for 2014-15! Thanks to your generosity, we did it! Our giving levels to the Foundation will be significant this year, and that will help us NEXT year when it comes time for District 6440 and RI to allocate matching-grant funds for clubs. We will have access to more Rotary funding for the projects we support because of your donations. Way to go!

  • Help our Local Rotaract Club...Hye Sun Kim of the Northwestern Rotaract Club recently updated us on a Networking Event for Rotaract that Rotarians can support on Tuesday, March 10th in the first floor conference rooms of Rotary International, from 6-7 p.m. The event is an opportunity to make connections with Rotaract & non-Rotaract students. They are eager to hear about our work experiences and community service involvement. If you are interested in participating in this informal session, please email the following details to Hye Sun at hyekim2015@u.northwestern.edu by March 5th: Name, email address, areas of work (education, consulting, non-profit, etc.) and years of involvement.  Any and all participation will be appreciated! Happy Birthday, Rotary!
President Paul noted that Feb. 23 was Rotary’s 110th anniversary, and in recognition of that special day urged club members to remember to observe the Four Way Test whenever they can -- whether in the workplace, at home, or in any life situation. It’s a great tool to help with sound decision-making!

Friendship Garden Update
President Paul announced that the Evanston City Council voted 5 to 4 in support of the proposal to widen and pave pathways in the Ladd Arboretum. Our focus now will be doing all we can to ensure the health of plantings in the Friendship Garden as the proposal moves forward.

Foundation 100% Giving Campaign
President Paul urged club members to participate in the club’s Foundation 100 Percent Giving Campaign.

Mark your Calendars for District Conference
District Governor Ellen provided a few details about the upcoming District Conference at the Westin Itasca April 10-12. This is a great event, especially for new Rotarians who want to learn more about Rotary. Please see President Paul if you are interested in attending. Some club members are planning on attending on Saturday, April 11 if you want to go for just one day.

Sergeant at Arms
Paul Giddings came to the meeting with raffle tickets in hand and delivered a memorable Swindle -- raising lots of money for the Charitable Fund. Thanks, Paul!

Program: Renee Brownlee, Gift of Life International

Renee Brownlee, a board member of Gift of Life International, presented a moving story of the organization and her family’s experience with a child born with a heart defect. Sophia, who is now 4 years old, is her and husband Joe’s “Miracle Story.”

She mentioned that Gift of Life was founded by Rotary in 1975. Since that time 17,000 lives from 67 countries have been affected. In 2003, Gift of Life International was founded and continues the work today in countries like Uganda, Jamaica, and El Salvador. Haiti is now one of their focus countries. Training of doctors is a major challenge in Haiti and other similar countries with no Pediatric Cardiologists in residence. Help is needed in areas of government participation and investment, hospital administration, pediatric surgery programs and NGO’s working with in-country programs.

Renee’s goals in working with Gift of Life International here in Evanston are outlined in three steps:

  1. Inform and explore the interest of local Midwest Rotary Clubs
  2. Increase the awareness and participation of the local medical community
  3. Increase the sustainability of the current Gifts of Life International programs.

Renee’s presentation inspired many to ask questions at the meeting. Her focus and determination to further the impact of this important organization are a testimony to her experience, her family’s experience and her willingness to share Sophia’s story - her “Miracle Story.”

We wish her well in continuing the conversation with other Rotary Clubs and those of influence in medical communities that can help sustain the work to help so many children and families in need here and abroad.
