PizzaFest has a new data and location!
This year we will have our annual fundraiser at Gigio’s Pizza, 1001 Davis Street (corner of Davis and Maple). Time and date is 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19. Your tickets will be issued soon! Prices this year will be: $20/adult and $12/child (12 or under), with tickets available at the door: $25/adult and $15/child. For more information please see either Dave Stumpf or Gene Servillo.
Mark your calendars for District Conference
The annual District 6440 Conference is coming April 10-12 in Itasca. Our club will have car-pooling available for anyone who wants to go. Please see President Paul if you are interested in attending. Some club members are planning on attending on Saturday, April 11 if you want to go for just one day.
Tuesday Toasters is Tuesday, April 14 at Sips on Sherman, 1741 Sherman AVe. -- don’t miss it!
Special musical performance on April 23!
On April 23, our meeting will be a special musical program from the Music Institute of Chicago. The program, by 14-year-old violin prodigy Julian Rhee, will be held in the Rotary International Auditorium on the third floor of the RI building, from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. Stay tuned for more details -- meantime, mark your calendars.
Special Note: World’s Largest Music Lesson
The Barrington Breakfast Rotary Club will raise money for polio eradication by attempting to set the world’s record for the largest music lesson on April 26 at 4:30 p.m. in the Barrington High School gymnasium, 616 W. Main Street, Barrington. The club hopes to assemble 2,500 guitarists to set the record, which has officially been registered with the Guinness Book of World Records. There were many guests at the April 2 meeting, including Jean Bowen, guest of Gary Bowen; Michael Morrow, guest of Diane Krier-Morrow; Rev. Michael Nabors, guest of Bridget McDonough; and Christina Coons, guest of Kat Eiff.
Our guest speaker, Jennifer Moran of Leadership Evanston, brought two guests: Sheryl Bartol of OUR HOME and Ahmadou Drame, of ETHS.
New Member Adrian Dortch brought his parents, his wife, Simbryt and kids Koi and Zyri. Great to have the whole family on hand for Adrian’s new-member induction!
Introducing the Volunteer Corps!
President Paul began the meeting by providing details about the club’s new Evanston Rotary Community Volunteer Corps, which makes it possible for non-members to help volunteer on Rotary projects. Though Rotary Volunteer Corps are found throughout the world, our club is the only club -- out of more than 70 -- in District 6440 that has chartered a Volunteer Corps. We are the first!
Members of the Corps provide their names and email addresses for our Corps database and are notified of upcoming volunteer opportunities. We have 16 volunteers signed up so far and many more are expected. Corps members have been invited to join club members on April 25 for the Rebuilding Together projects at 1817 Emerson Street -- near Emerson and Dodge. They will also be invited to our next hands-on service project in June.
President Paul and Adam Doty are currently liaisons to the Corps, oversight of which will be added to our club’s infrastructure of committees.
Joining us at lunch for the kick-off of the Volunteer Corps were Corps charter members Bob Griffin of Griffin Financial Strategies and his wife, Maribeth Kisner; Anna Fedyshyn; Katie Beeks, production manager at Light Opera Works; and Anna Roetinger.
Our thanks to these and our other volunteers for stepping forward to join us in this project!
Foundation honors
President Paul bestowed special recognition from Rotary International for Gary and Jean Bowen and Michael Morrow and Diane Krier-Morrow, who through their generous giving have been included at Level One of the Foundation’s multi-level donor recognition program. This represents significant contributions over many years and shows the great commitment of these four special individuals to the principles and work of Rotary. Many thanks, Gary, Jean, Michael and Diane!
Diane Claussen was honored for her contributions to the Rotary Foundation by becoming our club’s latest Paul Harris Fellow. President Paul noted that this honor represents a major step forward on the path of moving from being “a member of a Rotary Club” to “being a Rotarian.” Congratulations to Diane, and thanks for all of your many contributions to the club in such a short time since you have been a member!
Program: Jennifer Moran, Leadership Evanston
Jennifer Moran, Director of Leadership Evanston (LE), provided an overview of this program, now in its 23rd year in Evanston. As a part of the Evanston Community Foundation, LE is devoted to finding and developing emerging leaders in the Evanston community and helping bring people and resources together to address Evanston issues.
Jennifer brought two LE participants, Sheryl Bartol and Ahmadou Drame who explained how LE participants work together on a community project each year that helps raise awareness of an important civic issue while actually helping make progress in addressing it through the efforts of LE.
LE is a 10-month program that intensively focuses attention on the dynamics of Evanston -- its institutions and issues -- and helps build strong leadership networks. Alumni of LE have become aldermen, local officials, and leaders of Evanston’s nonprofits.
Jennifer also promoted Snapshot Evanston -- a program that helps Evanston residents learn about city issues with a much shorter and more condensed curriculum than LE.
We thank Jennifer and her team for an outstanding presentation!
