At today's meeting, Steve Cherveny updated the club on the status of the Vision Plan. He discussed the individual strategies in each of the eight areas of focus that were identified by the club members in February. Every members is being asked to choose a focus area in which they would like to serve. The committee in each of these respective focus areas will need to define the financial impact and specific steps needed to complete their goal. In addition, consideration should be given to the timeline and priority of club resources that can be allocated to each goal. Members are encouraged to let Jack know on which committee they wish to work.
A big thanks to Steve and the committee for their time and effort in pulling this presentation together. It's now up to the individual members to bring this to a successful close.
The club will again be participating in Home of the Sparrow's Holiday Gift Card program. Club members wishing to help out with this worthwhile program are asked to purchase gift cards (not greater than $25 each) from department stores such as Target, Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, ect. Gift Cards from local grocery stores are also encouraged and appropriate for this program. Please bring your cards to the social meeting on Thursday, December 15, 2016. Either Jack or Sue will see that they get delivered for you.

International Service chairman, Bob Blumberg, reported on an International Project being hosted by the Rotary Club of Glenview Sunrise. This project provides textbooks, computer centers and promiary school teacher training for villages in rural Guatemala. Glenview Sunrise is the International Partner and the Rotary Club of Del Valle, Guatemala is the host club.

The manager of a large corporation got a heart attack, and the doctor told him to go for several weeks to a farm to relax. The guy went to a farm, and after a couple of days he was very bored, so he asked the farmer to give him some job to do.
The farmer told him to clean the manure out of the cow stalls. The farmer thought that to somebody coming from the city, working the whole life sitting in an office, it will take over a week to finish the job, but to his surprise the manager finished the job in less than one day.
The next day the farmer gave the manager a more difficult job, to cut the heads off of 500 chickens. The farmer was sure that the manager will not be able to do the job, but at the end of the day it was done.
The next morning, as most of the jobs in the farm were already completed, the farmer asked the manager to divide a bag of potatoes into two boxes, one box with small potatoes and one box with big potatoes. At the end of the day the farmer saw that the manager was sitting in front of the potatoes bag, but the two boxes were empty.
The farmer asked the manager, "How is it that you were able to complete such difficult jobs during the first days, but are unable to do this simple job?"
The manager answered: "Listen, all my life I'm cutting heads and dealing with manure, but now you ask me to make decisions."
This morning's members in attendance had the pleasure of listening to Carol Wells, District 6440 End Polio Now Chair. Carol presented a brief history and update on the End Polio Now Campaign. She reviewed the history of polio, highlighting Rotary International's partnering with the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 1988. This newly formed partnership committed to eradicate Polio worldwide. There are still a few remote areas in Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan experiencing outbreaks. Political unrest and conflict in these areas make it difficult to deliver the much needed vaccine.
Our club's support toward this effort has continued to be generous. Carol stressed that "Polio Eradication will be Rotary's Legacy to the World". Thanks to all who continue to support the campaign--no matter how small. We are very, very close to our goal.

Alan Anderson reported that District 6440 is looking for families that would be willing to host an Exchange Student for the coming year. The Rotary Youth Exchange program provides thousands of young students with the opportunity to meet people from other countries and to experience new cultures, planting the seeds for a lifetime of international understanding. If you are interested in being part of this program in the future, contact Alan.
One of President Steve's goals this year is to have at least one member join a Rotary Action Group or Rotary Fellowship Group. As stated on RI's website, a Rotarian Action Group is an autonomous group of Rotarians, family members, program participants and alumni who are experts in a particular field, such as micro-credit or water and sanitation. More information about these groups and their purpose can be found on RI's website.
Rotary Fellowships are independent groups of Rotarians, family members, program participants and alumni who share a common passion. Being part of a fellowship is a fun way to make friends from around the world. Again, more detailed information is available at this link to RI's website.

On Wednesday, over breakfast with the Rotary Club of Wahroonga, New South Wales, Australian entrepreneur and philanthropist Dick Smith announced a donation of AU$1 million to Rotary (about US$750,000), citing admiration of Rotary members for the time they devote to others.
