Today's 50/50 side-bets winner was Bob, but he did not draw the black tee. Thank you, Bob for donating your side-bet winnings back to the Paul Harris Annual Fund.

Thanks very much to Sarah Howdeschell, Erica Anderson and Emily Mohr for updating us on the activities of the Interact Club. The Interact students have been busy lately, having completed the collection of backpacks & school supplies for underprivileged children, 300 pairs of socks for the homeless, food for the Food Pantry,  running a 5K to fund raiser against Lime Disease, volunteering for the Main Street Fest and helping to move books for the Fox River Grove Library.

 

Yesterday they raised money for cancer by doing pink hair strips. They are selling "Pink Out" T-shirts for tomorrow's football game and all Rotarians present at this morning's meeting purchased one. They are also involved in a "B3" project training which will allow them to make presentations at the grade schools about "Being Safe, Being Kind and Being Smart" on the internet. It is always a pleasure to hear from our Interact students and the wonderful things they are doing.

October's evening social will be held at the Rib House located at 540 E. Terra Cotta Avenue, Crystal Lake. The event will be held on Thursday, October 18th beginning at 6:30pm. Please contact Chuck to indicate you attendance.

The Friends of the Fox River Grove Memorial Library will be hosting a "It's Elementary" event on Wednesday, October 24th beginning at 5:30PM. They are looking for Rotary volunteers to help out with this event. It is a fun time and your efforts will be greatly appreciated.

An airline passenger approaches a stewardess and asks why his flight is being delayed. "It's all right, "replies the stewardess. "Its just that the pilot didn't like the sound one of the engines was making. It's taken us a while to find another pilot."

The Board has approved the promotion of a Paul Harris Match Program to members in good standing of the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove:

 

The program will run from 7/1/18 thru 12/13/18.  Checks should be made payable to “The Cary-Grove Rotary Charitable Fund” and delivered to Linda Trexler along with the printed name of the individual, address and relationship to the Rotarian requesting the match (e.g. Spouse, Son/Daughter, Grandchild, Friend, etc.).  Please contact Linda Trexler, Foundation Chair (847-462-1087) if you interested in taking advantage of this program.

Our guest speaker at last week's meeting was Brett Weiss of the Weiss scholarship Foundation. Brett is a member of the Rotary Club of Naperville.  Since 2009, Brett has traveled six times to Kenya in pursuit of following his dream for combating poverty in the village of Dago. Most of his efforts have been directed toward improving the education level of the children that live there. Dago is a tiny community of 3,000 people with an average family income of less than $2 per day. In Kenyan, the average education is only four years. Only 20% of the children actually go to High School.

 

To combat this, Brett established The Weiss Scholarship Foundation in 2011. The goal of this foundation is to have a positive impact on all of the youth members in Dago and the Kenya area. By providing a guaranteed source of income for students to continue their education through High School, Brett's hope is that the economic & health conditions of the area will improve. Since the Foundation was started, 42 full four year scholarships have be issued. Eleven students have graduated from High School and four have gone on to University.

As mentioned at today's meeting by Sue, Tiffany Au has developed a website "The Greatest Wedding Ever Donated". Tiffany is a graduate of Cary-Grove High School and is a past recipient of the Decker Scholarship awarded by the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove. Her website highlights her upcoming wedding to Caleb Remington and talks about the work they are doing together to raise funds and awareness for the fight against Cystic Fibrosis.
