Rotary President K.R. Ravindran has named six Rotary Global Women of Action for 2015. The honorees were chosen for their dedication and service, which has improved the lives of thousands around the world.
“Every day at Rotary I see firsthand how our members work to change lives and make a significant impact,” said Ravindran. “Rotary’s Global Women of Action embody Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self.”
The women will be honored at Rotary Day at the United Nations in New York City on 7 November. They will address attendees and lead discussions on various topics related to their work.

When Mariana Day moved in 1989 to the small beach town of Chacala, in Nayarit, Mexico, she noticed that the surrounding rural areas struggled to maintain schools. And most children weren’t able to go beyond an eighth-grade education. Day, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Bahía de Jaltemba-La Peñita, in Nayarit, had started a local scholarship program before she joined Rotary. Called Changing Lives, the program provided students with high school tuition, uniforms, school supplies, and transportation.

Today marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease.
The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern state of Kano. If no cases are reported in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving just two: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Nigeria is the last polio-endemic country in Africa. The continent is poised to reach its own first full year without any illness from the virus on 11 August.

The CG Food Pantry is in need of volunteers for the mobile food truck being delivered to the Community Church in Fox River Grove, this Saturday, between 7am-2pm. Due to the CGHS Volleyball team and football team games, a number of students are not available for the usual assistance. If you are in town this weekend and can provide some help, the distribution point will be in the shopping center parking lot located at routes 22 & 14 in Fox River Grove, between Jewel/Osco and the Bank.
Sue brought to the club membership today a "Pay It Foward" opportunity. Her daughter April won a $50 gift certificate from Legat Architects and wanted to do something meaningful with it. Pay it forward came to mind and another employee there matched her amount. So the current challenge is a match of $100. At today's meeting, she offered the challenge to club members. Members can participate by purchasing a gift card of any amount from Target, Jewel, Walmart, Best Buy etc. Bring that card to next week's meeting and Sue will make sure it gets to the right location for the benefit of "Home of the Sparrow". Thank to April for her thoughfullness and in wanting to pass along her good fortunes.
The Board has approved to sponsor two children ($300) for the Shop with a Cop program. The cost is $150 per child. Additionally, the club will match an additional three children (up to $450) to any Rotarian wishing to contribute toward this effort. If you are interested in donating to this worthwhile program, please contact Steve Cherveny by next week's meeting, November 19, 2015.
On Saturday, November 21st from 6:00 PM to Midnight, the McHenry County Police Charities, will be hosting their 9th Annual Networking Fundraiser at the VFW on Route 120 in McHenry. There will be Raffles, Live and Silent Auction Items, Food Buffet, Music, etc. There is a $5 Cover Charge and is open to the Public. Steve Cherveny or Pat Finlon would like to know if anyone plans to be in attendance so we can make the presentation for our donation--a great publicity opportunity for the club. So, please let either Steve or Pat know if you are planning to attend.
This year's annual Christmas Party will be held on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at 6:30 PM at the The Onion Pub and Brewery in Lake Barrington, located at 22221 N Pepper Road. The cost is $30 per person and includes salad, an entree from 4 choices and a beverage choice with meal.

NASA was interviewing professionals to be sent to Mars. Only one could go, but with one catch: He couldn't return to earth.
The first applicant, an engineer, was asked how much he wanted to be paid for going. "One million" he answered, "because I want to donate it to M.I.T."
The next applicant, a doctor, was asked the same question. He asked for $2 million. "I want to give a million to family," he explained, "and leave the other million for the advancement of medical research."
The last applicant was a lawyer. When asked how much money he wanted, he whispered in the interviewer's ear: "Three million dollars." "Why so much more than the others? "the interviewer asked.
The lawyer replied, "If you give me three million, I'll give you one million, I'll keep one million and we'll send the engineer."
This year's reverse raffle will be held at Galati's on March 16, 2016. Tickets for this event should be available sometime in December. The focus for club membership this year is to sell their tickets and also get people to attend the event. While the money received from ticket sales represents the major portion of revenue for this event, the side raffles have potential for making this event more successful. More details to follow, but for now, start lining up your attendees.
The Club will be working with District 6440 to update the Strategic Plan that it developed in 2007. The tentative date set for that planning session is January 18, 2016. All Club Members are encouraged to attend this session. Recommendations adopted at that session will be the foundation for future club endeavors. Please plan on attending this very important meeting. Details of time and location will be forthcoming.

The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove will be conducting a Winter Farmer's Market beginning Sunday, October 4th. The event will be held in-doors at the Algonquin Township offices located at 3702 U.S. Highway 14, Crystal Lake Illinois. The market will be located in building #6 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on the first and third Sundays of the month.
The Rotary Club of Cary-Grove’s membership is a diverse group of individuals that work together to improve the communities of Cary and Fox River Grove.
