Rotary District 6440 Assistant Governor Steve Swanson visited the Rotary Club of Cary-Grove today to discuss the work that Rotarians have be accomplishing in Guatemala.  This year will mark the sixth year in a row that District 6440 Rotarians have traveled to Guatemala to work at the Ak'Tenamit school.  The school is for grades 1-6 and has an enrollment of approximately 500 students.

The average income for the area is $500 annually.  Students that graduate from Ak'Tenamit typically move out of the region in order to seek employment in the nearby cities.  To assist with economic growth of the region, Rotary has undertaken a project that will promote a vocational high school with emphasis on promoting tourist to the area.  There are three quality restaurants that have partnered with the H.S. to help accomplish this objective.

In addition, the Rotary Club of Lake in the Hills has completed an International Project in the region for Aquaponics, which includes a fish farm for raising Tilapia.  This allows the students to receive the benefit of having protein added to their rice and bean diet.  This is a hands-on project that is open to all Rotarians.  To learn more about the important work being accomplished in Guatemala, visit Rotary District 6440 website.
