Kenya Literacy Project
At today's meeting, Larry Barnett from the Barrington Noon Club, presented members with their club's most recent project in Kenya. They are proposing a Literacy project for underprivileged high school students.
The club's proposed plan is to provide financial assistance to approximately 14-16 students who otherwise would not be able to attend High School. The program being considered would provide tuition expense for the students during their first year of High School. The proposed agreement with school officials calls for the second year's tuition cost to be in the form of donated equipment that would benefit all students. The third year's donation would be the establishment of two small businesses that, hopefully, will provide a sustainable revenue flow to support tuition well into the future.
The two businesses being considered are a bakery and a tilapia fish farm. The profits from the retailing of these two commodities would first benefit the school, but it is hoped that their success could provide bulk distribution to the surrounding areas.
