Last Week's Meeting
Last week Jen Schmidt, the Communications & Development Manager at Indian Trails Library, told us about the library's recent addition of the Short Story Cube, funded in part by our community grant.  The Short Story Cube is a new, portable access point to literacy that can travel throughout the community to share short stories. It rotates from the main Library and the Branch to community events. Thanks Jen for showing us how we are contributing to literacy.  Here are fact about it: 
  • After a story prints out, statistically, it is shared up to 2 ½ times so that other readers can enjoy the printouts.
  • The paper uses no ink, is recyclable and BPA free. 
  • Content inside the Story Cube can be curated to a specific theme.
  • The Short Story Cube also has online access. Members can read more stories from the Short Story Portal. The Story Cube also allows writing submissions through this portal. More information on this option coming soon.
  • The front of the Story Cube has two touchless sensors that can be programmed to distribute age appropriate content.

New Project with Arlington Heights Rotary
Martha and Jeff Weiss met with Karen Baker from the Arlington Heights Rotary Club to hear about a project that they are partnering with the River Cities Club and we would also like to join in.  The project concerns a long term foster care home for girls 12-17 who are unaccompanied minors arriving in the US.  Maryville Academy is the agency heading this project and it is on a large piece of property in Arlington Heights that needs outdoor cleanup and landscaping.  We are looking for volunteers to join in the initial workday for the cleanup of a garden area so that the residents can enjoy the outdoor space.  Here are the details:
 
Date: Saturday, July 29
Location:  800 N. Fernandez, Arlington Heights  (this is the former home of Sisters of the Living Word)
Time:  9am to 12:30pm  (9am tour of the building is scheduled)
Description: Cleanup/mulch day for patio area and surrounding areas if we secure enough volunteers.  Planting will take place later in the year when the weather is cooler.
Volunteers:   All are welcome, kids under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.  Please bring work gloves and tools
