Cass did Fun and Frolics ad lib style telling a story that started in Greece and ended with guitar and piano playing at the airport.
Our speaker was Stella from Lake County Honor Flight to ask our help with 25th Veteran flight to DC with a short film presentation. They honor 25 veterans at a time, with a total of 513 honored so far. The film highlighted great moments like special escort down I94 to the airport, the groups of people gathered at the airports to welcome the Veterans and the flag draped from a fire truck ladder, for example. Stella spoke of the first unofficial trip in 2013, to take Black Navy Veterans to DC and discovered the Lake County Honor flight organization which has opened many other opportunities for Veterans. The 25 veterans on each trip are escorted by guardians who assist on the trip with anything the Veterans need. Stella asked for our help with donations or volunteering our time as guardians. Guardians need to raise or donate $1300 to accompany the Veteran. The trip for the veterans is fully funded by donations and time generously given by the guardians. The medical needs of a Veteran are taken care of by the necessary medical personnel. Prefer a Lake County resident to be the guardian for the Lake County Honor Flight program, but outside Lake County residents are welcome. Fellow Rotarians shared stories about experiences from their loved ones who served for example, Cass and Randy shared a wonderful memory when Randy accompanied his Father on a Honor Flight. The most touching part was the coming together of 3 generations as Randy and his father were greeted by Randy’s son (Airforce Captain) when they landed in DC. Shawn shared his own experience as a guardian and how meaningful it was to watch Vietnam Veterans receive recognition in a way they did not receive when they first came home due to the protests. President Shawn donated $1,000 to Honor Flight as his President's choice donation. Neil won Roto and donated his proceeds to Honor Flight.
Former Rotary member Cathy Splett is coming to town from CA later this month. Anyone who knows Cathy knows she loves baseball. So, we are having a BG Rotary outing to the Schaumberg Boomers game on Saturday evening the 29th. The Boomers are playing the Joliet Slammers.
The gates open at 5:30 and the game starts at 6:30. There is a fireworks show after the game.
Tom has rented a 25 person indoor/outdoor suite for that night. If the interest is great enough it can be bumped up to a 35 person suite.
Tickets are $26 per person. Don’t worry about the payment at this time as the 25 tickets have already been paid for. We just need to know who is interested/available to attend. Let Tom know (tjkloepfer@att.net) and he’ll keep track of the attendees. There are also four parking passes available for the group, so hopefully we can get some carpools going to get everyone there easily.
Lastly, while food/beverage packages are available for purchase with a suite rental, it’s probably best to let everyone do there own thing for food and drinks there at the stadium.
