The Greater Chicago Food Depository offers a number of relief programs throughout Cook County. In conjunction with over 700 organizations, it provides food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and mobile food distributions. In the northwest suburbs, five local parishes help distribute produce, and sometimes meat and dairy, to residents in need. These distributions typically take place on the second Thursday of each month.
On each work day, the delivery trucks unload pallets of food between 8:00 and 8:30 am. From 8:30 to 9:30 am, volunteers break down the bulk bags and boxes of produce into family sized packages. As the needy arrive from 9:30 to 11:30 am, the volunteers will assemble family care packages (containing a variety of fruit and vegetables) and place them in the recipients’ cars. After 11:30 am, volunteers help clean and stack the work tables.
The next planned distribution will take place at St. Thomas Villanova located at 1201 East Anderson Drive, Palatine, IL on MONDAY, October 12. Any time you can give would be greatly appreciated. Simply show up, put on a mask and gloves, and let the giving begin.
