Carolyn Anthony, Director of the Skokie Public Library and Foundation Chair of the Rotary Club of Skokie Valley, was the Guest Speaker at our October 22, 2013 Luncheon Weekly Meeting.
Carolyn spoke about the Rotary Foundation history and operational rules. She pointed out that the mission of the Foundation of Rotary International is "to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, support of education and the alleviation of poverty",was founded in 1917 by Arch Klumpf and the motto is "Doing Good Will in the World".
Carolyn said that the main project of the Rotary Foundation has been, and still is to wipe out the dreadful polio epidemic throughout the world. In fact up to this date over two billion children have been immunized by local Rotarians and volunteers (It is worth mentioning that the cost to immunize a child is only 60 cents). In addition, Carolyn said that through the "Matching Grant Program" mechanism which was started in 1965, the Rotary Foundation has been making major improvements in areas such as: Peace and conflict prevention/resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy, and economic and community development throughout the globe.
Carolyn Anthony is a very proud member of the Rotary Club of Skokie Valley and is always engaged in all kinds of Rotary activities. Just recently she received a Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service Award for the 2012-2013 Rotary Year. Congratulations Carolyn!
