Last week, we found out what we all knew, we have a great college.  Dr. Valek has led the Brazosport College team for almost 20 years and she does a great job.  It was indeed a treat to hear an update directly from her.

This week,  Rod has secured a hypnotist. And not just any hypnotist, this is a doctor of behavioral psychology and an author.  I am sure you will want to be here for this one.

We have a lot of events coming up. Thursday night is Junior Achievements banquet.  If you do not have anything planned for that evening, please try to support them.  They are honoring several area business men.

Saturday there is training in Houston for our foundation.  If you would like to go, please get with me to determine how we can ride together.

Saturday evening we are going to a Skeeters game.  They are currently tied in first place at this writing.  I need to tell the box office how many tickets I need Tuesday.  They are holding several for us. So please check with your family’s social director and let’s have a great outing.  The game starts at 6:05.  We will leave around 4:00 from Asiel’s on an AIR CONDITIONED bus that is provided at no charge.  Tickets are $50 per and food and drink are included.

Editor’s Note:  The members of rotary are a very diverse group. We come from all over the world, and we come from right here in Brazoria County. We have different backgrounds, experience and skills and when we join them together, amazing things happen. As we are joining together to do good in the community, we thought it would be great to feature members of Rotary.  Allow us to introduce you to Chris Gilkison. Chris is one of the newest Rotarians to join the Brazosport Rotary Club. We reached out to Chris to learn a little bit more about his career path, motivation, family and hobbies. Welcome Chris to the Club!

What do you do and what was your career path that brought you here? I am a Financial Advisor for Edward Jones. I started with Edward Jones in Overland Park, Kansas in 1987.  In 1990, I was invited to move to Edward Jones’ home office in St. Louis where I worked twenty years as a General Partner.  I was responsible for Jones’ Financial Planning Group and helping meet the needs of our high net worth clients. Recently, I wanted to slow down from the corporate world and move to Texas to be closer to my son. I came to Lake Jackson in February of this year. I am 61 years old, I wasn’t born in Texas, but got here as soon as I could.
What do you love most about your job? I enjoy working with clients and helping them achieve their financial goals. I am also very proud of my company, when I started with Edward Jones, 27 years ago, we had 1,000 offices and today we have 12,000 offices. I am honored to have helped ensure its growth and being committed to the communities in which we serve our clients.

Why did you join rotary? When I started with Edward Jones in Overland Park, Kansas, I wanted to be a Rotarian, however, they already had a financial advisor, so I could not join the club. So instead, I joined an Optimist Club and served as president.  27 years later, I have finally achieved becoming a Rotarian. I look forward to being part of this great organization and making new connections. I am truly grateful to Serena Andrews who invited me to join Rotary and introduced me to the college.

What motivates you?  I want to make a difference. I want to leave things better than I found them. I enjoy helping people and I want to make a positive difference for the people I come in contact with.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Hobbies? My free time is mostly spent visiting my children and parents. As far as hobbies go, currently, I am a boater without a boat. I love to golf and watch movies (favorites are Top Gun and Field of Dreams).

Can you tell us a little bit about your family?  I am single and have two children. My son, Tyler is 29 years old and is as CPA with Big Red. My 31 year old daughter Karissa lives in St. Louis and is currently pursuing a degree in information Systems.  My mother is 87 years old and my father is 92 and they have been happily married for 67 years and they currently live in Topeka, Kansas.

What is something interesting the Rotary club should know about you?  At one time I owned a sail boat. I sailed from Fort Myers to Key West. It was a 26 hour trip filled with beauty and adrenaline. I hope to go on many boating adventures while in Brazoria County.

The District Rotary Foundation Seminar is scheduled for Saturday, Sept 20, 2014 at Houston Community College (5601 West Loop 610 South). Registration, continental breakfast and fellowship start at 7:45 and end at 8:30 am. 8:30 to 1:00 pm will be presentations.

Our Club will cover the registration fee of $10/person. Just make sure President Ken Vernor and/or  Rotary Foundation Director Lucilla Henderson know that you intend to attend. We generally all car pool to the venue.

In addition to learning more about The Rotary Foundation, donations made for either the Annual Fund or for Polio Eradication  at the seminar will receive double Paul Harris Credits. Yes, it will me matched 1:1 by the West U Club. I was also told that members who are unable to attend the seminar may send their donation thru members that are coming to the seminar. In my role as District Annual Giving Chair, I am the one doing the paperwork. Therefore, members that are interested in taking advantage
of this offer  make your contribution payable to the Rotary Foundation and give it to me. This is a great way to expedite your reaching the next level of your Paul Harris Fellow. For any questions or further information feel free to email or call me or Lucilla Henderson.

When Friendswood Marine Cpl Steven Schulz came back from Iraq with a severe Traumatic Brain Injury, the community came together to support he and his family.

He has been the recipient of both a highly modified Golf Cart, to assist in his mobility and independence, and later a Mortgage-Free home to accommodate his physical challenges.
Unfortunately, Steven is no longer able to safely use the Golf Cart.

The Schulz Family knows how valuable receiving help is. They also understand that it is more of a blessing to GIVE BACK.

Space Center Rotary Club will be supporting a live auction of this One-Of-A-Kind Golf Cart on Saturday August 30, 2014 5:30pm at T-Bone Toms, 707 Hwy 146, Kemah, TX

ALL proceeds will be donated directly to: Homes 4 Wounded Heros

Below you will find attached a flyer promoting the event, plus 3 photos of the golf cart.

If you can't attend the live auction and would like to make a personal donation to this project, click on the following link: http://militarywarriors.org/raisetheflag/southcentral

Please help us promote this event & share with your friends.

Be sure to mark your calendar for Saturday August 30 at 5:30pm & support Corporal Steven Schultz's efforts to Pay it Forward
