Editor’s Note:  The members of rotary are a very diverse group. We come from all over the world, and we come from right here in Brazoria County. We have different backgrounds, experience and skills and when we join them together, amazing things happen. As we are joining together to do good in the community, we thought it would be great to feature members of Rotary.  Allow us to introduce you to Chris Gilkison. Chris is one of the newest Rotarians to join the Brazosport Rotary Club. We reached out to Chris to learn a little bit more about his career path, motivation, family and hobbies. Welcome Chris to the Club!

What do you do and what was your career path that brought you here? I am a Financial Advisor for Edward Jones. I started with Edward Jones in Overland Park, Kansas in 1987.  In 1990, I was invited to move to Edward Jones’ home office in St. Louis where I worked twenty years as a General Partner.  I was responsible for Jones’ Financial Planning Group and helping meet the needs of our high net worth clients. Recently, I wanted to slow down from the corporate world and move to Texas to be closer to my son. I came to Lake Jackson in February of this year. I am 61 years old, I wasn’t born in Texas, but got here as soon as I could.
What do you love most about your job? I enjoy working with clients and helping them achieve their financial goals. I am also very proud of my company, when I started with Edward Jones, 27 years ago, we had 1,000 offices and today we have 12,000 offices. I am honored to have helped ensure its growth and being committed to the communities in which we serve our clients.

Why did you join rotary? When I started with Edward Jones in Overland Park, Kansas, I wanted to be a Rotarian, however, they already had a financial advisor, so I could not join the club. So instead, I joined an Optimist Club and served as president.  27 years later, I have finally achieved becoming a Rotarian. I look forward to being part of this great organization and making new connections. I am truly grateful to Serena Andrews who invited me to join Rotary and introduced me to the college.

What motivates you?  I want to make a difference. I want to leave things better than I found them. I enjoy helping people and I want to make a positive difference for the people I come in contact with.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Hobbies? My free time is mostly spent visiting my children and parents. As far as hobbies go, currently, I am a boater without a boat. I love to golf and watch movies (favorites are Top Gun and Field of Dreams).

Can you tell us a little bit about your family?  I am single and have two children. My son, Tyler is 29 years old and is as CPA with Big Red. My 31 year old daughter Karissa lives in St. Louis and is currently pursuing a degree in information Systems.  My mother is 87 years old and my father is 92 and they have been happily married for 67 years and they currently live in Topeka, Kansas.

What is something interesting the Rotary club should know about you?  At one time I owned a sail boat. I sailed from Fort Myers to Key West. It was a 26 hour trip filled with beauty and adrenaline. I hope to go on many boating adventures while in Brazoria County.
