Wanting to do something a little different, and make the event a night to remember, Rotary Club of Freeport President Mike Stafford decided to hold his Installation Banquet on the historic research vessel Atlantis II docked at Freeport Harbour.

Owner of the vessel Gordon Hunsucker, the Captain, and assorted crew members gave tours of the ship, Steve Davies entertained on the keyboard, guests enjoyed hors d'oeuvres, a free-flowing bar, and dancing to the backdrop of twinkling lights in the harbour.

Then it was time for the presentations ...

While past Assistant Governor Sonny "Mr. Rotary" Waugh presented each new board member with their pins Mike gave a speech about how Rotarians think big and the how power of Rotary joins good people together to help worldwide.  He also emphasised his commitment the 2007/8 theme "Rotary Shares."

2007/2008 Board of Directors:

President Elect: Chris Lowe
Treasurer: Dominique Norris
Secretary: Melinda Mitchell
Past President: Mike Stafford
Vice President: Stephen Wilchcombe
Director: Bert Lightbourne
Director: Wilbur Major
Director: Eunece Morris
Director: Ann Bain

Then it was time for the much anticipated raffle and a live auction for the Grand Prize of a week for two aboard the Atlantis II on an expedition.  In total, over $8500 was raised for Rotary on the night.

In closing the presentations Mike called Rotarian Diane Johnson to the upper deck and presented her with flowers and a big thank-you for organizing such a fabulous party.  Then he called his "Rotary partner" longtime girlfriend Vicki up to thank her for all her help and in front of everyone, popped the big question.  The crowd shrieked with delight, and when Vicki finally recovered from shock, did indeed say yes, si, oui, and yah, just to be sure everyone understood.  Rotary certainly did "share" in this moment!

The happy couple

After the success of this event, plans are in the works for further fundraising events aboard ship.  Stay tuned!
